    Artist History
Fields of Asphodel saw their first light when the dead leaves of early Autumn 1997 were falling and in misty Padova (northern Italy) five extreme musicians met and decided to give birth to a new project together. As the asphodel does on the remnants of the dead, the band was born on the ashes of previous musical projects from whose lifeless carcasses of disappointment a new phoenixlike power was meant to emerge and spread its wings in skies still unexplored. With this aim, thrash metal drummer Antonio Fabris from DAIOMAI and DAIOMAI 's rhythm-guitar/vocalist Giovanni Fort joined forces with well known Padova-scene bass player and sound technician Mattia Berti, skilful black metal guitarist Giuliano Mogicato (also member of the black metal duo EPHEL DUATH) and DAIOMAI 's former lead-guitarist Paolo Scarinzi, to try to achieve through their different tastes and experiences a more brutal yet melodic sound as the "Gothenburg-style" lesson well taught (bands like At The Gates and Dark Tranquillity have been a leading light for FoA).Since the very beginning the band has been determined to compose and play live a violent, extreme and fast melodic death metal, to combine the pure rhythmic brutality of death metal and the perverted speed and tortured vocals of blackmetal with the enthralling spell of harmony and melody.Soon after their birth, Fields of Asphodel started touring northern Italy as support act for the paduan friends TRAUMA CRANIKO performing covers of their favourite influential swedish bands and writing their first songs together. After months of intense live activity Fields of Asphodel had to procrastinate the recording of their debut CD to allow Giuliano to record EPHEL DUATH 's demo "OPERA" on which Giovanni was present as a guest vocalist on three tracks.During summer 98 Giovanni, Antonio, Giuliano and Mattia go to Göteborg (SWEDEN) for an enlightening pilgrimage to meet their scandinavian idols and pay them homage. After a fantastic and inspiring period with the swedish metal gods, Fields of Asphodel come back to Italy and start writing and refining the material for their first promo CD "DEATHFLOWER".The recording sessions of DEATHFLOWER take place during the first days of premillennial 1999 in the azure rooms of "Blue Train's Infernal Recording Studio" (Mira, VE Italy) (famous for italian metal bands like: Cenotaph, Evol, Flash Terrorist, Ephel Duath...) where the expert hands of Giorgio Spolaor and Antonio Morgante (despite the low business) provide the band with the powerful aggressive yet clear sound they need.Once finshed the recording of DEATHFLOWER the band starts looking for a record deal and prepares to self-finance the printing of DEATHFLOWER which is meant to be published in cd format, with astounding cover artwork by Dark Tranquillity 's guitarist Niklas Sundin, to promote Fields of Asphodel while they look for a deal to record their full length. In april 99, after having played support to Detestor in a local gig in January, Fields of Asphodel sign a deal with Northern Darkness Records for promotion/distribution of DEATHFLOWER and start working on the songs for the follow-up album scheduled for winter 99.In autumn 99 DEATHFLOWER is finally released; the mcd contains 5 songs, (the last of which instrumental), that well represent the phoetal form of what Fields of Asphodel are meant to be: aggressive, melodic, fast, intense and emotional. The songs demonstrate the blending of the members' influences into an articulate powerful and original musical mixture, completed by the introspective and personal lyrics sung hatefully and desperately according to the atmospheres of the songs, and purposely conceived to be at the same time striking in expression and manifold in meaning thus fitting the sentiments in the song but also allowing for plural interpretations and appropriation of the text by the reader/listener.While DEATHFLOWER hits the stores Fields of Asphodel get more mature new songs written and overcome some minor line-up problems getting ready to face the hopefully imminent touring activity and the recording of their first full length, which is most probably going to be entitled "Obsidian Skies" and whose date of recording is still to be scheduled sometime around the end of 1999 and the first months of the year 2000.The band is currently touring for promotion of DEATHFLOWER and trying on the crowds some of the new songs from "Obsidian Skies" whose recording date is unfortunately still uncertain.
