Artist History
Chasing Light has been an ever-evolving vision, which I have sustained for over a decade. I have been an earnest fan of atmospheric, thought provoking music since my discovery of electronic euphony, listening to programs broadcast from the University of Pennsylvania's radio station, WXPN. A bass player since adolescence, I was part of a band that did covers of progressive rock groups and was drawn to music that goes beyond what is available via mass marketing. Leaving the band to pursue a career in data processing, I put music on hold for several years but always had an instrument nearby and continued listening to and developing my influences. Those influences range from the jazz-fusion of Gong, Jean Luc-Ponty and Al Dimeola to the electronic dreamscapes of Vangelis, Tangerine Dream and Kit Watkins. I extensively studied the music industry, and along with the introduction of music software for the PC, I was captivated with the notion of creating my own music.Realizing I would need a vehicle with which to record my compositions, I started out with a cassette based multi-track recorder and began creating music. Several years of working on various compositions went by, but I was never really satisfied with the sound quality of a 4-track porta-studio. When digital recording finally became an affordable option for me, I was able to obtain an 8 track digital hard drive recorder. This enabled me to combine the computer based composition software with a high quality-recording medium. My wonderfully supportive and resplendent wife, Naomi, and I moved to North Carolina in 1996 and discovered the Chapel Hill area, which has a vibrant musical community. Due to Naomi's answering an advertisement for fiddle lessons, I met her instructor, a musician named Betsy Shatto. With Betsy and several other local musicians, we formed the band "Betsy in the Gene Pool." Having a means to record our band's music pushed me in the direction of creating a project studio, and I began accumulating the equipment to facilitate the recording of other people's music. Chasing Light Studio was born! Among the various projects that Chasing Light Studio has to its credit are the CDs Slow In The Left Lane, by Betsy in the Gene Pool, and the Sprung! Soundtrack, released by the Somnambulist project of Chapel Hill. Several other local artists have worked on their CD projects at the studio. In spite of everything else going on, I still find time to work on my upcoming CD Vast Is The Sky. It is a collection of eclectic electronic/organic music that is uplifting, yet contemplative of nature. Look for it here soon. |
