    Artist History
Individually, Barely Heroes is composed of four young men that followed the call of music, like many others. However, Wes Hutchinson, Matt Huber, Jerrad Green, and Drew Scholl found something that many of the others that are searching never do find. They found a unique sound that has yet to be heard. Their sound embodies influences from four different corners of the world, melted into good old rock & roll with an element of pop. With influences from the likes of Elton John, Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, Black Crowes, and Jamiroqui these four musicians combined form Barely Heroes. With hometowns ranging from South Carolina, Switzerland, Texas, and Indiana, Barely Heroes was formed after Wes, Matt, and Jerrad met in Nashville, Tennessee. Huber made the longest journey of the group, choosing the United States over native Switzerland after collaborating with an engineer that worked on some Phil Collins projects. Realizing that there wasn't much opportunity in Switzerland for music to be his profession, he enrolled at Belmont University in Nashville to study engineering and production. "Wes was playing in a band and they were just playing covers, but I really liked what they were doing," said bass player Huber, "so I picked up my guitar and joined in. He called me a few days later to join the group as a bass player and that's how it started." Both Wes and Matt had written their own songs and wanted to start playing their original material, but they needed a drummer. "Wes called me to play a gig," said drummer Jerrad Green. "So we practiced a couple times and played this local gig and six months later I was still playing drums for Barely Heroes." Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Green picked up his first set of sticks at the age of four, and by the time he was 19 he had played drums on a Grammy Award winning album for Flaco Jimenez. Through college he toured with an established Contemporary Christian band and Drew was the lead guitarist for the band. Drew had heard Jerrad play with Barely Heroes and Drew really dug what they were doing. When Jerrad decided to drop out of the 'arena' touring circuit to play with Barely Heroes, Drew decided to make the move himself and take a chance on music that he was more passionate about. He was soon asked to join the band on tour and both Barely Heroes and Drew were excited about this move.Front man Wes Hutchinson has been playing guitar and piano for 7 years and has been writing for 6 years. Hutchinson came to Nashville in 1998 from Charleston, South Carolina, eager to get a band formed and an album recorded. It was only after they began to play in clubs around Nashville, that the soul of the group was established. They gained a strong local following that included Sean Neff, a local producer and Belmont alumni."Sean heard us at a club downtown and really liked our sound. I think he was one of the few guys that I ran into that dug the same kind of rock & roll that I did and we just magnetized somehow," said Hutchinson. "He thought we could do a lot of damage in the studio, so he brought us into his studio and we started working on an album."The sound that Barely Heroes and Neff have created is captivating on tape, but their live performance is the essence of Barely Heroes. It is then that they can physically, musically and emotionally communicate how important the love of their music is to their audience, which has been the backbone of rock for years."This band is more than just that... it's become a family and we put Barely Heroes first," Hutchinson said in such a sincere tone, you can't help but believe him and in everything else that he says. All four members are quick to complement each other's precision and musicianship.Barely Heroes and their music have the power to change the face of rock music. The energy in the soul of their music is like nature's cycle- it has been molded and shaped into something unique and alive. It will make change and it will be passed down like the evolution of rock & roll has been doing for years."Right now we're just looking for the next best step for Barely Heroes," said Hutchinson. "It's all a cycle and we're just part of it, but we're here for one reason and that is to rock!"
