Artist History
Sorb is an alternative music band from Montreal that began in May 1999. Present members of the band are Eric Cournoyer, former lead vocal, Yan Parenteau, guitar, Luc Tellier, drums, Alex Laflamme, bass.
A tree, the "Sorbier" in french, inspired us the name of Sorb and represents the fact that we are each a part of a whole.
All members are Sorel-Tracy's own in Montreal suburbs and evolved into many highschool bands like Daily Grind, Blitzkrieg and Label that influenced hometown musical scene. Creating this band was for our musical interest first but, after 3 years, we are all very good friends.
In the beginning, Sorb was mostly inspired by new-metal music, represented by bands like Deftones and Korn. But the "punk and alternative" side of each member became gradually hard-alternative with a Papa Roach and Nickelback touch, which been influenced by the neo-punk and grunge style of the mid-90's.
SORB started when Rick, lead vocal, joined a band of musicians he had played
with in high school, he's the only remaining member of the original crew.
Later, the loss of the drumer and the need of a second guitarist brought Yan
and Luc to the band. While they were getting out their first compositions
they finally found Alex just before they won the Star 2000 Contest wich made
the band pretty much what it is now. The band got a great hometown place
after this contest.
That summer, they recorded Ab Irato, their first 2 songs demo at Tam Tam
studios with Marc Gendron, Natasha St-Pierre's musical director. They
distributed this demo for free over Internet and rapidly became headliner of
every next gigs. Then, Furia Webzine made web promotion for the band by
making contacts and booking. 5-Line Legacy contacted SORB to open for them
at 'Le Café Campus' in Montreal which has been the first part of a big
makeover for the band. Members realized the need of effort and seriousness
to raise SORB to a higher level of musical performance.
To encourage hometown emergent music and promote themselves as part of it,
SORB decided to create the LOUDfest which became a must-see show since the
first year, 2000. Since then, SORB became headliner of this annual event and
mostly every other subsequent stage appearances.
From December to April 2001, SORB was subscribing to the FarmClub monthly contest to
finaly gain the March 3rd position, this bring us to become the first canadian band to get in
the Top 5 chart of this VH1 and MTV american television show. All of this represents 20 000
downloads on the Farmclub website just during april. Billy Dunlop, D Squared Picture co. video director contacted
the band and wrote a clip synopsis for the song Lost but the project never
been released.
Afterward, SORB put their songs on Mp3.com. On November 18th 2001 only, the
song "give me back my life" has been played 544 times. Since then, it's been
played up to 10,000 times. Many american radios played the songs from
Mp3.com and emails came in from all around United States.
From February to October 2001, www.sorbonline.com was the no.1 of the 200
positions www.puremetal.com chart.
In 2002, SORB wrote and produced Eponymous EP, but never finalized it
because of Will's(guitar) departure. When he left in June 2002, SORB changed
logo, and gone from metal to a more hard-alternative style. In November,
SORB released Follow the Path EP. In the first week, SORB sold every copies
of the first duplication. The new songs of Follow the Path reached an
all-new crowd because of the more commercial genre. To date, the site
www.sorbonline.com has been visited more than 50,000 times. SORB is again in
writting process and are looking for someone to promote themselves and make
them follow their dream...
