Press Reviews
from CMJ #1190 - The self-titled debut from one-man sound artist Dominions (Lawrence Lui to his parents) isn't exactly the year's most engaging record, nor do its specific tracks stand out much. But as with most ambient/collage-type work these days, physicality and catchiness are moot points. Lui distinguishes himself from his bedroom electronics brethren with an ear for diversity and a computer geek's sense of humor. Dominions approaches multiple angles of arcana with even-keeled, good-natured aplomb.Just when the going gets pretentious, a Dungeons & Dragons fan tide like "Throne Of TheChrysanthemum King" or a hidden New Order cover lightens the mood. Thus, the merciless static of "Ah Pook The Destroyer" segues naturally into the sine-wave pop softness of 'lullaby." Recommended for noise fans unafraid to admit their fondness for Depeche Mode and Lou Barlow. -Jordan N.Mamone For Fans Of: Azusa Plane, early Smog, Magnetic Fields, Merzbow. Recommended Tracks: "Distant Shoals At My Command," "Ah Pook The Destroyer," 'Lullaby," "Apollo Creed" |
