Artist History
So anyways, 4 guys get together in Oct of '98 with an offer of a weekly gig at The Attic, formerly Corks, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. A few weeks after that and we started playing other bars. A few weeks after that and we all of a sudden had a two week gig at The Gallery in Yellowknife. (Although the scene there has changed come 2000, in '98 it was palpable. The number of musicians playing and supporting each other in that relativly small place was inspiring, and I for one came back a different person.)
All told, by the time we were a year old as a band we had played @ 80 shows. We threw everything into it and, of coarse, povertised ourselves. Shit happens, bit off more than could chew, hindsights 20/20, blah, blah, blah, it was a learning experiment. Yeah! That's it!
Now, it was the bills that took out Hendrix, not Jimmy, but Daniel. They fucked us all up mind you, but not to the same end as Hendrix. Dan came to the conclusion that he needed to quit the band. Everybody has to choose their own path and we didn't begrudge his decision, and are still friends.
Now we are three, Corey Cottrell, Dan Ellison, and me, Lee MacDonald. We never questioned whether or not we would go on. To quit was unthinkable! Happily for us we became a tighter band as a three piece. Having only one guitar played (louder) by the songwriter made our respective styles more distinct, and it made us fill a lot of holes in our playing.
We decided to play less gigs, work our butts off and try to make a CD because playing 85% cover gigs sucks and the original scene pays little unless you have a CD to sell, are on the radio or packing large rooms.
Now there is the internet. A way to get the exposure that indie-original bands so desperately need without being indebted to some huge company with an iron fist on your art. A CD, exposure!, a way to bypass the cover circuit and with luck a way to stay out from under the thumb of as many as possible. Sure we'd like to become wealthy by playing our music but money didn't give us our passion for it and the lack thereof hasn't taken it away.
Though it may have seemed to some of our fans and supporters from year one that we dissappeared, broke up, died or crawled off the face of the earth, it just ain't so, baby! And now we have a CD to prove it. The disc was recorded at M and R Records in Innisfail AB, in just five frantic and hazy days. We then recruited a great producer in Tony Demedeiros-and in three days mixed the album-and as a result have a product that sounds better than we could have hoped for considering the restraints, for our first full length indie EP!!! (Shall I also mention , for under six grand!) Pretty good considering we were just going there to make a demo.
To say we were excited about it would be an understatement, but I did and it is. You can have a taste of some of the tracks here on our site or at our CD release parties at New City Likwid Lounge Oct 18 or at Sweet Rocks Oct 21 or in Fort MacMurray on Friday Oct. 27 in the King's Lounge at Keyano College.
To get more info, or book us (that would be nice) call 488-ROCK and ask about Taoist Sun! Let's party, it's been too long!
