Artist History
The year was 1992; the melodic hard rock music that had ruled the airwaves and MTV for the past decade had started to take a back seat to a new kind of music blasting it's way out of Seattle .. grunge rock. While most of the bands that had been hawking their wares on the Sunset Strip learned the meaning of drop D tuning and started running for the nearest barber shop and second hand clothing shops one band held their ground firmly, continuing to sell out clubs and theatres throughout Southern California - Picture Perfect. Formed in late 1990 via a chance meeting between lead vocalist Rich Mortlock and bass player Aaron D'Alto (previously with underground favorites St. Elmo's Fire), the songwriting duo put an ad in a local Los Angeles music paper looking for a guitarist and a drummer. Before long lead guitarist Matt de Mari and drummer Paul Stanza answered the call and the foundation was laid. It would be just a matter of time before Hollywood would not know what hit it. Rehearsing for nearly a year before playing out, the band opted to do unplugged shows at small out of the way venues in order to get their chops up, "We wanted to be as tight as possible when we started playing out rather than slowly getting it together in public", says guitarist Matt deMari. "The acoustic gigs helped us work on our harmonies and allowed us to start building a local following around LA. It definitely helped, our first 'real' show had a huge crowd." By the time they took the stage at Hollywood's Roxy Theatre in December of 1991 their live show was already a force to be reckoned with. Supporting one of the Sunset Strip's top bands at the time, the guitarist for that band quit that very night and was overheard saying, 'We just got blown off the stage by a band that has never played a show before!!' Word of the band's highly animated and dynamic stageshow spread quickly and from their second show onward Picture Perfect was a headlining act throughout Southern California. The fever worked it's way through the A&R community and before long nearly every label had sent scouts to their shows without even hearing a note on tape. At the urging of several people the band holed themselves up in Stealth Bros. Studios in Burbank, CA for six months and emerged with what was intended to be their local self released six song Ep. As things do, situations came into play that diverted the band from releasing the Ep and they moved on in life. Eight years after the fact the Ep has finally emerged and the world can now appreciate what Southern California considered their best kept secret for nearly half a decade. "All I can say is it's about time," relates frontman Rich Mortlock. "It's been eight long years that this record has been hidden away in a vault and it's about time people had a chance to own it. Now, when do we start recording our next one?" |
