"Travelogue" If Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassidy had had a CD Player in their car when they drove cross-country in the 1950s this is the kind of bluesy gypsy jazz they would?ve listened to as they searched for the soul of the road. If Edward Hopper had composed music for his fellow ?Nighthawks?, this is the painted sound he would have written.Travelogue is a remarkable acheivement, a smoky tone poem, a dreamy road movie of exquisite music that takes the listener from San Francisco to Cuba, Paris to Provence, Alaska to Brazil. The discerning ear can hear the influence of Monk, Coltrane, Reinhardt, Hancock, and others, but also the free verse of the Beat poets and langorous loneliness of expatriate painters. Yet there is also something innovative on these tracks, something blue on blue. The seamless weave of sound, with Jacob Aginsky on piano, James Garrison on tonor sax and flute, Richard Duke on bass and Time Carter on drums, comes as close to the joy of pure spontaneity as four passionately disciplined musicians can come. It?s as if the four had met in an ancient caravanserai and decided to tell the rest of us through their music of the marvels they have seen and heard in their travels to distant lands and cultures. In my own future travels I will be carrying in my old leather satchel a copy of this exquisitely produced CD as part of my treasure trove of road music, plus several other copies as gifts for friends around the world to show them that there still is gold in the hills of California, and its name is Travelogue. -Phil Cousineau, author (North Beach, San Francisco,3/00)
