The discerning ear can hear the influence of Monk, Coltrane, Reinhardt, Hancock, and others, but also the free verse of the Beat poets and langorous loneliness of expatriate painters. Yet there is also something innovative on these tracks, something blue on blue. The seamless weave of sound, with Jacob Aginsky on piano, James Garrison on tonor sax and flute, Richard Duke on bass and Time Carter on drums, comes as close to the joy of pure spontaneity as four passionately disciplined musicians can come.
