Press Reviews
Nyabinghi Monthly - March 2000They say true genius within the human race only shows its humble face once each century. Last century Krokus was the standout musical prodigy that conquered our hearts, minds, and souls with their extremely original brand of heartfelt rock ‘n’ roll. Now that Krokus has crawled back into its shell to make way for newcomers with even madder skills, who will take its place and when will it happen? These are very good questions with very simple answers. Who? Gil Mantera’s Party Dream. When? It has already happened. Gil Mantera’s Party Dream debuted its beautiful head on Christamas Eve of 1999 at the Nyabinghi and proved their undeniable talents to everyone in attendance. The two-man outfit comprised of brothers Donny and Gil Mantera turned Gil’s party “dream” into a party “reality” with an ass-conquering stage (and off-stage) show employing devices such as jump ropes, nunchukas, a tiger statue, incredibly hot dancing, skin, and tremendous skill. And what about the music? Intricately powerful, moving, reflective, innovative, timeless, breathtaking, generously unforgiving, bold, exciting, subtly chintzy, peaceful – it’s all of this and much more. The thing that sets Gil Mantera’s Party Dream apart from everything else is that if you stripped them of their stage show their music alone still shines more brilliantly than a horse on heresy charges, and if they were to lose their instruments and voices the stage performance would carry them further and higher than an 808 Fantasy Blastathon. In fewer words, these guys are incredible and well worth the price of admission. If your soul is locked, Donny and Gil have the key. Don’t miss Gil Mantera’s Party Dream’s CD release party on Saturday March 4, 2000. You can bet a willowman’s hammer thong that I’ll be there. John H. Sopranski |
