Artist description
I am an amateur composer, classically trained and also schooled at Berklee college of Music. Once in awhile I come up with something worthwhile and share it with others. Here's an example. |
|
Musical Influences
Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Ruth Lee Vigeland, and countless others. |

One of the best compliments I ever received was that I sounded like myself! |

Artist History
I was born in the state of New Jersey; a stones throw from New York City, where most of my American roots originate. Prior to that they hailed from Norway, Scotland, and other assorted European locales. My last name is Norwegian (Vigeland) and is actually famous over there due to a great artist named Gustav Vigeland. He created Sculptures among other things. I'm a bit vague on my Mother's roots, but I know a chunk came from Scotland. Anyway, this brew is where I'm from and it's not all that bad :-)
I grew up in a small suburban town, with not much to complain about (yeah, right!). Life was good (occasionally). At eighteen I ventured forth and arrived here in Boston and have never left other than a couple of vacations over the years. Now some 25 years later I am happy, healthy, wise, and not yet wealthy monetarily, but rich with two beautiful daughters and a wonderful woman (for the past 6 and a half years). She's a saint to put up with all my crap! My daughters are twins, which is an experience to write about in itself!
Music has always been a major part of my life. For my first 20 years; from 1958 until '78, I was immersed in a world filled with it. My mother, a Juilliard alumnus was always involved in some sort of musical activity; church choirs mostly. I started piano studies in 1965 and carried it through to 4 semesters at Berklee College of Music ending in 1978.
My place in this world has always been somewhat of a conflict, one between sensibility and creativity. I say conflict because artists tend to neglect essentials and favor a fantasy world of our own creation. Both are quite valid worlds but they can really be at war with one another also. How many genius artists have ended in ruin and death due to an overwhelming ugliness that consumed them.
So here I am the product of an artist, having abilities of my own and facing a world that thrives on business. Money. Starving artists are the norm in this world. Very few become rich. So a middle road was what I decided to take and keep a job and get myself "comfortably set", as a friend of mine once advised me to do. He was right. Stability is a prerequisite to being able to create and SURVIVE as an artist. I'm still working on that one...:-)
