    Press Reviews
Below is a review from The Scene, March 25,1994 TALENTED STUDENTS MY CUP OF TEA A trip to Boston Spa tomorrow evening for the 'Boston Tea Party' should be well worth the visit. The Crowm Inn is the venue for the fine quintet 'Boston Tea Party', a group of talented young musicians from Leeds College of Music. The Quintet is co-led by Jonny Boston (sax) and James Evans (clarinet-sax), two winners of YTV Young Jazz Player of the Year competition, hosted at York Theatre Royal last Summer. Jonny Boston's refreshing approach is hard to pigeon hole stylistically, and obviously impressed Judges John Dankworth & Chris Barber I have heard this quintet on a number of occasions and have never failed to be impressed. They are a very self-assured bunch of young musicians who actually appear to be enjoying what they do - and that's always a bonus! Ed Johnson Below is a review from The Jazz Rag, November 1999 No, the typesetter has not gone beserk; the name of the group, the CD and the label really are one and the same. An impressive studio debut for this young quintet, formed by tenor saxophonist Jonny Boston, graduate of the Leeds Music College, and winner of the 1993 Young Jazz Musician of the Year award. Both he and fellow reedman James Evans, another Leeds graduate, have paid their dues on the less travelled route of today's newcomers, by working with the traditionally slanted Phil Mason All Stars, which displays a refreshing independence of spirit, something which shines through here in terms of both material and interpretation. On the up-tempo 'Skavolution', Benny Golson's 'Killer Joe' and Thelonious Monk's 'Straight No Chaser', Boston sports a muscular swagger á la Sonny Rollins. Ballads such as 'Let's Get Lost' and 'Time After Time' display his featherey light tone and lyrical lines in the Stan Getz mode, rather than that of John Coltrane, something which informs 'Naima'. The equally talented Evans, principally featured on his distinctively reedy-edged clarinet plus delicate flute and robust tenor, contributes some interesting material too in 'Porque Dos' and 'Exapno Mapcase, Special Agent' (an in-joke perhaps?) in addition to a wistful vocal on 'Blue River', originally recorded by Bix Beiderbecke in the mid-1920s. The strong rhythm highlights pianist Tom Kincaid's sympathetic support and strong solos. An impressively exciting sound, traced with some wry humour, from a dynamic, jazzwise and fresh band.
