All girl. All rock. Killer live sounds, Porcelain have been fast ripping through pub venues all over Melbourne. Not seen them? Hell, where ya been?
Porcelain formed in 1998 when bassist Melissa Lock and a guitarist friend joined forces. They soon bullied their friend Jess Cogger into taking on vocal duties and caught drummer Alex Kastaniotis on the rebound from local act Sheraw and began to gig regularly. In 2000 they replaced their original guitarist with Sarah Blaby, who had previously played in Sheraw, Hecate and Plastic Blue Sky. With solid melodies and straightforward guitar riffs, its no surprise Porcelain love bands like Television, Gang of Four, the Pretenders, the Ramones and Souisxie and the Banshees.
Cementing a friendship and a solid rock ethic, the girls have been spending their nights lending support to acclaimed rockers The Donnas at the Corner and New York’s infamous Lunachicks at the Punters Club. Porcelain were also there for the killrockstars babes the Bangs and those crazy New Zealanders The Datsuns.
Putting on stellar performances at illustrious Melbourne venues like Revolver Upstairs, the Punters Club RIP, the Tote, the Corner Hotel, the Esplanade, the 9th Ward, the Empress, Pony and the Metro (Goo) and have most recently, Porcelain ventured north of the Victorian border to play at the Annandale Hotel in Sydney and were also part of the Macquarie University’s O week celebrations. Porcelain ripped through these gigs in 12 months, proving these girls know what it takes to be in a rock band. Hard work, dedication, awesome live shows and being able to kick out the jams with your friends!
2000 saw the release of Porcelain’s debut self-funded EP “Shimmerstar”. Recorded by Lindsay Gravina at Birdland studios, RRR and PBS picked up on the strength of the EP and were very supportive. Richard Kingsmill picked up on the title track, playing it on Triple J’s Australian Music Show. The third track from the ep, “Parasite” was voted as MP3 of the week on Triple J. Melbourne street press Beat reviewed the EP calling it “rather captivating indeed”. The second track of the ep, “Catcall”, has just recently been remastered for inclusion on the CD Girl, released by Indent studios showcasing the brilliant talents of Melbourne girl fronted bands.
On the strength of this support so far, Porcelain are really proving themselves with their early 70’s punk inspired sound. Bassist Melissa Lock writes her bass lines and the band structure their own parts around them. This process has built a solid music writing foundation that is a very strong part of the driving punk Porcelain sound. Melissa cites her personal influences as Blondie, The Stooges and Paul McCartney. Her bass melodies are accompanied by rock out guitar parts courtesy of Sarah Blaby’s Bikini Kill and Sleater Kinney influences. Vocalist Jess Cogger writes all her own lyrics and her vocal style can vary from a Mick Jagger swagger to a sultry Debbie Harry to a rocking Joan Jett in a matter of moments. Drummer Alex Kastaniotis loves Weezer and the Hellacopters, and is a hard hitter with her own distinct drumming style.
Porcelain spent two days in October 2001 recording their new 5 track EP with Simon Grounds (Rocket Science, Snout, Underground Lovers) producing and engineering on the purely analogue dials. With only a handful of overdubbed guitar tracks and one vocal track with minimal overdubbed harmonies, Porcelain have a raw and live sound that belies the fact they are a three piece. Included on the EP will be their buzz-saw version of “I’m Bored” by the Stooges. This EP has been printed and has the hottest artwork designed by Devils Candy (Warped CD, Magic Dirt art) - Porcelain are ready to go!

“if Madonna had been a rock chick around the time of Borderline, rather than the pop temptress she was, this just might have been what she would have come up with”
