    Artist History
From day one Noisegate, from Richmond, Virginia, has always been focused on the music. Formed late in the summer of 1996, Noisegate started as the brainchild of Chip Cosby. Chip has been writing songs for some time and had been a member of the punk trio, Loaf. He desired to form a band that had a harder sound, but could also show it's lighter side, from time to time. He formed a hard-core band called Noisegate that drew it's sound from such bands as Vision of Disorder, The Deftones, Quicksand, and Life of Agony. A careful listen to any Noisegate song also reveals pop influences not common to many hard bands. Noisegate played its first shows in the fall of 1996 at Twisters and at several house parties. The original line-up for the band was: Chip Cosby on guitar and vocals, Brian Bachman on drums, Kris Wallick on bass, and David Wolf on guitar and vocals. In January of 1997, David quit the band and Will Knight joined. Noisegate received its first significant press coverage when it was on the cover of the "Insync" section of the Richmond Times Dispatch in April of 1997. The band was included in an article on Richmond area teen bands. In October of 1997, Noisegate recorded its first demo tape. It was recorded by Chris Lawrence and Nate Barton on Chris's ADAT recorder. One track, Metaphor, was recorded by Jonathan DeMaiyo at Charlton Productions. This was the band's first trip to the studio. The fall of 1998 through the spring of 1999 was a dark time for the band, when Kris Wallick left after moving to Baltimore, Maryland. Seth Nichols replaced him on bass, but soon left to pursue other interests. In April of 1999, Noisegate asked Steven Anderson to join the band. Steven played his first show with the band at a house party in June, and proved to be the missing link that the band needed to thrive.
