Damn Brandy is one of the new breed of progressive groove rockers that approaches music as a launching pad for an exploratory voyage into the outer regions of musical soundscapes. We don't want to seclude ourselves to anything, and we personally prefer to look at music through more of a jazz perspective, says drummer Alby Cohen. Even if we're not necessarily playing what people would consider jazz, there's no reason why you can't take rock and roll, and take it out there. The band includes Drew Segal on guitar and vocals, Ron Eigen on keyboards and vocals and Tom Tinkava on bass, and although they make an occasional foray into cover tunes, the focus of their music is on original material. The quartet loves to take an uptempo rocker like Rules and turn the grooves inside out until it disintegrates into improvisational chaos. They trip off into the uncharted waters of Phish during Dizzying Freedom Of the New World, a pulsating fusion of rock, funk and jazz that burns with intensity. Damn Brandy's experimental nature is most pronounced on Freetime. The song features a frenzied pacing of jumbled jazz-rock progressions that is guaranteed to shortcircuit the brainwaves of fans of more conventional pop sounds.
