Artist description
The Art Sound Orchestra is the result of collaboration with 19 singular creative artists from a host of different backgrounds. It all started in 1990 when Matthew Russell, Brice Wassy and Mike Ellis put their heads together and came up with the ground plans for an International "World Beat" orchestra. |

Artist History
With the Art Sound Orchestra we take a journey stretching to the far reaches of the musical world - indeed to "Other Worlds". In this journey we cross rich and varied terrain created by the extraordinary rhythms and colourful solos of 20 versatile and talented musicians. Ultimately, through their creative collaboration, we travel through adventurous territory that defines a completely new contemporary jazz sound - that of the Art Sound Orchestra.Only through the depth of musicianship in this orchestra can one find so many layers of sound to travel upon. Via the individual and collective talents of a full brass section, a three-member drum/percussion unit and a dual-bass and guitars string section, we are treated to rhythm layers both colourful and diverse. Yet this deep galaxy of sound never overpowers. Instead, it provides our magical carpet, our foundation from which we can step out for some wonderfully adventuresome solo excursions.Check out when guitarist J. F. Kellner takes us on an echo-space romp to introduce the first of Ellis rapid-action soprano sax and Genest's fine trumpet riffs takes us wailing through "Metamorphosis". Couchet really gets alto-hungry on "Hungry" while Ravi Magnifiquee's clean-driving percussion work strengthens the kiting alto solo of guest Brad Wheeler on "Flying" two compositions of the great composer Matthew Russell. Mark Sims guest trombone gracefully struts through "Other Worlds 2", And there is more!Ellis' strong soprano returns in "Other Worlds 3", which also features Barry Wedgle's superb Spanish-influenced classical quitar work. Genest's flugel-horn is introduced in the funk strut of "Inner City Blues". Matthew Russell's throaty vocal/percussion flute work is evident in several locations but is most prevalent on his "Urban Pygmy" composition and on Brice Wassy's sweet rhythmic pleasure piece, "Daze Off". In all, Mike Ellis and the Art Sound Orchestra's Other Worlds provide you with 23 solos from 11 soloists set against creative and deep-folded rhythm sections to keep your creative journey moving forward. Our tour comes compliments of the fine compositions of Mike Ellis, Wassy and Russell, who also conceived of this musical collaboration. Led by the creativity of Mike Ellis, they have melted incredible individual talent and experience to produce this innovative new jazz sound. It is an immense feast. This two-year endeavour is now brought to light through mp3.com's presentation of Other Worlds. We're sure you will enjoy this delightful journey that allows you to truck, strut, stomp, wail, and fly through the many dimensions of the Art Sound Orchestra's "Other Worlds". |
