Artist History
Y is an accomplished singer/songwriter who has been writing original tunes since she was 10 years old. Her musical career began when her mother salvaged a neighbour's upright piano on its way to the local dump. Y taught herself to play the out-of-tune ivory elephant and began writing and singing in the privacy of her bedroom. It was at her piano that she was able to express her emotions and find a place of peace for herself. Her first public performance occurred when Y was just 14. The venue - Y's high school cafeteria in Mississauga, Ontario. Close to 1,000 students packed into the cafeteria to see a showcase of high school talent. Y, who was known for her athletic abilities, caused quite a stir when she took the stage in her tweed skirt and high heels. "The place came to a hush", recalls Y. "You could hear the dead of breathing as I walked from behind the curtain onto the stage. There was no clapping, no nothing, just silence. I was shaking so badly that my leg was banging against the underside of the piano". When she finished her performance, the crowd rose to their feet and gave Y a standing ovation. The one-time shy teenager had come into her own. Inspired by her peers response, Y continued to write and perform. Y has spent the past two years performing and perfecting her music in local clubs and coffeehouses. The result has been the unearthing of "Place Of Standing", an 11 song compilation that features a unique blend of folk - pop styles with a Celtic influence. Y's lyrics are original and passionate. Her voice has been descibed as having the purity of an angel with haunting melodies that resonate deep into the hearts of her listeners. "Place Of Standing" was recorded, produced and engineered by well-known producer Bill Buckingham; with Rob Steinger on electric guitar, dobro and mandolin; Mark James Fortin on acoustic, grunge and electric guitar; Kelly Becker and Rene Worst on bass; randell Stioll on drums; John Webster on Hammond organ; back up vocals by Y, Judith Rabinovitch, Catherine St. Germain, Mark James Fortin and Rocko Vaugeois. |
