Artist History
Riser were formed in the summer months of 1999, although at this naive point in their collective musical career, they preferred to languish under the horrendous "The Lunatic Express". Original members included Mike Berry (guitar / vocals), Mike Hodges (bass), Toby Swan (drums / vocals) and Richard George (vocals / guitar); at this time all were students attending Birmingham Uni. While the band were still finding their feet, Rich performed acoustically at several Brummy venues, soothing many an ear with his beautifully cute indie-pop melodies. This line-up recorded their first studio demo entitled "Genki" sometime in the summer of 1999. On the strength of these four tracks, "Point of View", "One Right Word", "Silently" and "Comatose" an interview with the Birmingham University newspaper, and a healthy chunk of industry interest were secured. Additionally, "One Right Word" received airplay on local radio. Many, many months of songwriting and rehearsing were to follow. Andy Roberts of peelthestain.com got involved with the band, and a management deal was soon beaten out. More gigging followed. In April 2000 the band were encouraged to record a marketable demo. Dennis Matthews was chosen to produce Riser's first "e.p.", and among the recorded tracks were live favourites "Jason" and "Spitting Teeth". The latter is featured on the forthcoming 25 Records compilation. In June 2000, guitarist Mike Berry departed from the band, who were subsequently forced to perform a number of pre-booked gigs as a three-piece. Pulling it off in spectacular fashion, a three-piece they remained for several months until the arrival of "metal as fuck" guitarist extraordinaire, Ian Gilmartin in November 2000. |
