    Artist History
The history of PSYCHO CHARGER begins a few years back in Miami Beach, FL... Originally known as THE PSYCHONAUTS, the "band" was originally a studio project founded by Jimmy Psycho. After releasing a debut cassette, the demand for The Psychonauts to play live increased, and eventually, The band made their public debut at a birthday party in honor of our dear sweet Lord and King, Elvis Presley. At that moment, the band began to define a new type of music that is best described as "Industrial-Strength Trash-a-Billy". Since that first show, the band has witnessed attendance at their live shows significantly increase in equal parts due to their unique sound and live shows that feature Elvis Vegas-style jumpsuits, Mexican wrestling masks, Planet of the Apes tributes, and B-movie trailers and other oddities. Due to pending legal action from a group using the same name, The Psychonauts changed their name, to PSYCHO CHARGER, formerly annoucning the name change on the 65th birthday of Elvis... The only band of it's kind in the known the world, PSYCHO CHARGER combine '50's-era rockabilly, surf-twang, and punk energy with today's industrial technology resulting in what the band (and press) have labeled as "industrial-strength trashabilly". This mutant cross-breeding of styles has been received exceptionally well as demonstrated by sales, club, and radio play. The PSYCHO CHARGER recording ideology is that music was a lot better back in the early days due to the fact that the music did not suffer from the incredible amount of overproduction that plagues most of today's genres. With this mind set, a few PBR's, and some bad '50's horror movies, PSYCHO CHARGER went into the studio and recorded three songs and put them on a cassette. The results of these "Trashfest" sessions are both rough and raw, and provide a great soundtrack to rumbles, parties, drag racing, bar-b-ques, and cruising trailer parks. The tape did very well for the band, earning it favorable reviews in numerous zines as well as air play on radio stations scattered across the country and abroad. The band has sold over 400 copies of the tape at shows, through the mail, and over the internet, where the PSYCHO CHARGER have established a fan base that ranges from rockabilly hellcats to punk rockers to the gothic/industrial/techno types. In February of 1999, the band relocated to New York City to explore opportunities outside of the state of Florida, and quickly obtained a firm foothold in the NYC music scene by playing a string of live shows, most notably regular appearances on the "Grave Rockers" series of shows based in NYC. In the summer of 2000, PSYCHO CHARGER hooked up with the NYC-based Skully Records for the release of their debut CD, which will include 16 tracks of the bands patented "Industrial-Strength Trash-a-Billy". The CD was released in May 2001, and has earned the band rave reviews. Other recordings include a PSYCHO CHARGER (Psychonauts) single "Whippy Dip" b/w "Room in Hell" on the Japan-based 8-4-5 Records sold out of it's initial pressing of 1000 copies, making it the fastest-selling single for the label. Also out now are tunes released on the "Grave Rockers" compilation (Lo-Fi Records) and the Skully Records "Gothabilly: Wakin' the Dead" and "Gothabilly 2: Rockin' Necropolis" Upcoming releases include the "Gothabilly 3" and "DEVO-tional 2: A tribute to DEVO" (August 2001). The past year has been very busy and productive for the band: recent showcase gigs include the 1999 and 2000 Digital Club Festival (formerly known as The Intel Music Festival), the 2001 CMJ Conference, the 2001 Cleveland Undercurrents, and the 2001 Nashville New Music Conference. The band also played the first-ever "U.S. Psychobilly Rumble 2000", a three-day event (Halloween weekend) that took place in NYC and featured the best bands of the genre from all over the world. In the summer of 2001, PSYCHO CHARGER played at the first-ever "Heavy Rebel Weekender" in Winston-Salem, NC this past July (where they packed the room to an ever-enthusiastic crowd), the 2001 "Ghouls Night Out Festival" (in Columbia, SC), which is an all-day long horror-rock n' roll event, and the 2002 "ElvisFest" in Chapel Hill, NC. In addition, PSYCHO CHARGER played at the 2001 Arlene Film Festival, where their video "Grave Robbers" won an award for Brian O' Hara and the band. In the time that the band has been together, they have appeared on the soundtrack to the Covert Creative Group film "The Blank Page", which has just been picked up for worldwide distribution following a successful run at film festivals worldwide. Also, the band recently played at a screening of the film "Rock and Roll Frankenstein" at the Anthology Film Archives in NYC at the request of the film's director Brian O' Hara, who also produced the band's first video for "Grave Robbers fron Outer Space" which can be seen online at Grave Robbers video , and is slated to run on the Troma Film Studios television show in England on the BBC. The band is currently working on their second video project for the song "Ghoulfriend", which is scheduled to be released on a companion video/DVD for the aforementioned "Gothabilly" series. In May 1999 PSYCHO CHARGER (then known as The Psychonauts) received a 1999 Florida Jammy Award for Best "Garage/Surf/Rockabilly" act at an award ceremony at the Hard Rock Live in Orlando, FL. The Jammy Awards are the Florida state equivalent to the Grammy Awards, with nominees being voted for by music fans and then judged by two separate panels consisting of members of the local and national music industry. The band was invited to be one of the few live acts to perform at the ceremony, however, prior commitments in NYC prevented the band from playing. Currently, the band is continually working hard and keeping busy with practice, writing new material, and playing a regular schedule of live showcase gigs in NYC and abroad, including recent outings to promote the Debut CD and the"Gothabilly" CDs. PSYCHO CHARGER has shared the stage with a variety of music notables, including Nashville Pussy, The Electric Hellfire Club, The Amazing (Royal) Crowns, The Independents, El Vez, Man or Astro Man?, Truckadelic, Agent Orange, The Mad Daddys, The Hillbilly Hellcats, Hi-Fi and the Roadburners, Link 80, the Belmont Playboys, new alt-rockers Dishwalla, the Swingin' Neckbreakers, and the legends Link Wray, Robert Gordon, and Ronnie Dawson. Press Reviews
Rue Morgue- "...coming from the rightous side of the devil's trailer park...mixes red hot psychobilly fire with cold industrial steel and distorto surf punk...unbridled, unpretentious...one explosive boilermaker." StarVox - This is a manly man's ghoul-rock. For those of you who sometimes feel that this genre gets a little too silly -- check out Psycho Charger. There's enough fun-lovin' testosterone for even the butch-est of rockers. NY Rock- Say out loud, "Unbridled psychobilly mayhem."... The guitar twangs, covered in reverb and distortion, the vocals rant and bellow, the bass pounds, and the drums thunder like nobody's business...If you want some rock and roll to kick you in the teeth and get you out of the doldrums, it's right here, baby, right here. Rock N Roll Purgatory- What comes of an experiment that splices Ministry DNA with Carl Perkins? I'll tell you what, some heavy industrial music to drink PBR and shoot guns to. You'll want to go on a crime spree or have rough sex with a hooker covered in whiskey...this is good stuff...Wickedly unique and for those of you who need sinister inspiration. CULT CUTS- "High octane garage music from the band formally known as The Psychonauts! Their debut cd has enough fire power to fuel up any Psychobilly tank! You should have no problem playing this disc immediately over and over." Nitro-zine- "A great departure from the incredible amount of crap that is out there now...This hybrid of rockabilly and industrial actually applies well. Makes me think of what "Pretty Hate Machine" might have sounded like if Trent Reznor used the Cramps as his backing band. Highly recommnended, I hope they get huge just to show the Korn-Bizkit legions what a real ass-kicking is." Jam Magazine - "Incredibly cool...distorted vocals over reverb-drenched guitar with enough twang that would make Link Wray and The Cramps proud...no tricks or competing influences...just cold, hard psycho-surf." Deathrock.com - A proto industrial psycho western. Picture Ministry, Fields of the Nephilim, and make them a lot more tongue in cheek and you have Psycho Charger. Viilage Voice- Hoodoo voodoo surf rockers Psycho Charger capture that Munsters/Iggy Pop/Ventures vibe of the Cramps, circa Bad Music for Bad People, with chilling enthusiasm. Time Out New York- It's a Psychobilly Freakout! Okay, that a Rverend Horton Heat quote, but it fits right here, as this band robs the grave of rockabilly for kicks! Annexx- "Oh Lord, do these guys know how to work yer ass or what? A cold bucket of chicken and a warm six-pack is all this thing is missing...evil minds at work, so ya better hide yer daughters." Demo Universe- It's trashabilly with an industrial twist, mixing harsh electronics and distorted vocals with the traditional twang-whammy guitar: The Cramps meets White Zombie. NY Waste- "Heavy-Twang Hell Rock!!! Good to the last shot!"
