05/09/2000 10:47 PM Here's a review from Pure Reviews. FrankCotolo posted 05-05-2000 Marino DeRienzo 'Amber' The newer mp3.com artists have an innocence about them that often translates into potential. Chester sure has it and now along comes Marino with one tune that could launch a fine talent. 'Amber' is a simple recording, with a delightful 'toy-like' synth middle and Marino's pleasing, different voice. Yes, different. It sounds like Rod Argent's phrasing from the Zombie days; that mellow yet definitive and confident tone, pleasing, if you will. And even that which comes off as 'amateurish' is refreshing when compared to so much of the stuff on this site that exudes a certain attitude of 'I got it, listen.' That's what I love about the younger artists. They are giving us all they got, which is probably not be thier best because they have such a long road ahead of them. I pray they experiment, second-guess themselves and be true to how they are and how they will change. This will present us with a movable feast of sounds. Marino deserves looking after. Watch him, listen and encourage growth. As I said in my two Chester reviews, if I were to work with talent, it would be that which is developing. That which is open to craft and art in a way many of the stuck-in-one-genre artists are not. 05/09/2000 10:46 PM Here's another review from I'm Listening All Day. Frank Johnson posted 05-08-2000 Marino DeRienzo I listened to "Amber" Performance: Interesting combination of alternative and sixties The Archies feel in this song here. The vocal melody is ultra poppy and soft. Yet, there's this very distorted guitar layer underneath the song. Ocassionally, there's a a simple keyboard fill. The bass is high in the mix and is peculiarly interesting with the rest of the mix. The keyboard lead is quirky and simple. Production: This song is why I love MP3.com. I just listened to Closure's ultra professionally recorded song, then I get to hear this little pop diddy that was put together on a spool and thread budget. It's simplicity is what makes it appealing. Lyrics: The lyric is so sincere and earnest. It is like a conversation: Marino is telling us all about Amber - and it is said and sung so nicely- that we listen. Overall Grade : (B-) Good luck with your music . Kindly yours, Frank at Swurveland www.mp3.com/swurveland
