    Artist History
Most bands practice three times a week and tour relentlessly until they burn themselves out," says Chad. "We live in three different states and have totally separate lives, but we come together to hang out and make music." Chad, who lives in Los Angeles, runs a music studio out of his garage, recording such luminaries as Colin Hay (Men at Work) and Billy Idol. Tim, who does the same, only in New York City, once worked for the city of Brooklyn as a social worker, helping adults cope with traumatic head injuries. Chris is a financial writer by day and lives in Boston. While Chicken, who has performed with members of Parliament and Bad Brains in upstate New York, has been known to train dogs from time to time. What keeps a band separated by 3,000 miles and unrelated day jobs together? Lazlo Bane are old friends. Chad and Tim have been playing together in various musical incarnations since 1990, including a brief stint with Lisa Loeb, while Chris and Chicken have roots dating back to their high school days. Says Chad, "As far as I'm concerned, our friendship is the band's hallmark. There's nothing like it. Individually, we play with other musicians all the time, but Lazlo Bane is special. We value the band and the friendship so much that we make time for it, no matter what else is going on in our lives." The role that each band member plays in Lazlo Bane is also somewhat less than ordinary. Although Chad is the lead vocalist most of the time, he also plays piano, guitar, bass, and drums. And the same can be said of Chris, Tim and Chicken. "We had a lot of fun recording the new record," says Chris. "Sometimes we forget who played what on any given track."

All the Time in the World All the Time in the World is the product of more than two years of constant song writing. "From the start, we wanted to make a great record," says Tim. "Something you would listen to over and over, from beginning to end." "We probably recorded more than 30 songs over the course of those two years," adds Chad. "Each time we wrote a song we thought was going to make the record, the bar was raised. So the next song would have to be even better. By the end, we'd trash 10 ideas before we found one we liked. It was a real growth experience." Stylistically, All the Time in the World runs the gamut, from polished pop ditties to raging rockers and mournful dirges. "It's happy, sad, funny and angry all at once," says Chicken. Lyrically and instrumentally, All the Time in the World is a more mature work than the band's first CD, 11 Transistor. "We don't want to be the kind of band that makes the same record twice," says Chris. "A good song is a good song, no matter how it's performed. And that's what we were aiming for. It may also sound different from the first record because we're all a little older." In contrast to 11 Transistor's muscular guitar pop, the songs on All the Time in the World are honest and confessional supported by arrangements that feature pianos, violins, and saxophones as well as the tried and true bass, guitar and drum rhythm section. And there's plenty of singing. "We really took our time with the vocals," says Chad. "They're the focal point of the record." 11 Transistor (Almo Sounds, 1997) "11 Transistor was Lazlo Bane when Lazlo Bane was basically just me. In the studio I had one bass, a cheap guitar, and a couple of old tube amplifiers. Most of the record was done on 16 tracks with very few effects. The idea was to work with as little as possible and make it sound the best it could. All the songwriting was done on an acoustic guitar into a little dictaphone. The melodies had to work, and every song had to pass the dictaphone test before I'd record it. I'm proud of it. It's my first baby."
