Artist History
Ambient Music Cartel was formed in 1998 by Vocalist / Guitarist Aaron Newman, Drummer Jeff Morava, and Bassist Luke Mullenix. The trio formed and quickly added a lead guitarist and a keyboardist. Although the Lead Guitarist didn't last the, the Keyboardist Dan Harp did. After playing to an enthusiastic Oklahoma City audience the band entered the studio in the summer of 1999. Their self-titled, self-produced album was released a few months later and the first run of production was sold out within five weeks. In the spring of 2000, AMC suffered a brief set back with the loss of their Keyboardist Dan Harp. Determined to continue on as a three piece, the group endured. Only a month later the band happened upon Shawn Proffitt (guitar/keys), and, missing the tone of a fourth member, he was promptly included. Shawn was not only able to fill in the missing keyboard lines, but was also able to add versatility by providing alternate guitar and vocal harmonies. The inclusion of Shawn has allowed Ambient Music Cartel to move further with their music than ever before. The band is currently working in the OKC/Tulsa area. AMC's second album titled "Going Nowhere" was released in mid-October 2001. The second album was recorded over the past six months in Oklahoma at F5 Studios with Buddy Valentine and mastered in New York City at Sterling Sound with UE Nastasi (has worked on Cold Play, Yngwie Malmsteen, Biohazard, Metallica, etc.). This new album has exceeded expectations for both the music and sound quality, and stands to far surpass AMC’s first album. |

AMC Band learns success through diversity of music 08/29/01

Ambient Music Cartel agrees that the best way to describe their sound would be to call it pop rock.
In exactly three weeks, five days and seven hours members of the band Ambient Music Cartel will board a plane bound for New York City and begin the process of mastering the tracks on their first CD.
The band will be working with Sterling Sound; a company which has helped artists such as Dave Matthews Band and Macy Gray fine-tune their songs in radio-quality sound.
"Mastering is like putting a paint job on a car," bassist Luke Mullenix said.
After perfecting their sound quality, the members of Ambient Music Cartel will begin shipping their CDs out to record companies in hopes of signing with a label.
"My goal is to go as high in the business while I still have control over what I play," drummer Jeff Morava said.
Although the band has been together for over a year, the name was settled on more recently. The word Ambient in the band's name can be misleading. Although ambient is a form of electronic music, this band did not choose its name as a reference to this type of music.
"We had picked a name that somebody already had so we came up with a long name and eventually cut it down to Ambient Music Cartel," Mullenix said.
According to band members, their music more fittingly belongs in the category of pop rock. The band is a collage of artists with varying tastes in music which range from 80s glam-rock to indie bands to Jamiraquoi.
"The 80s will never die. They don't like to admit to that. I try to sneak it into our material but it never happens," guitarist and sometime-keyboard player Shawn Proffitt said.
Proffitt's love for 80s rock is a running joke among the other members.
"The first time we hopped on the Brewery stage we had a big joke that, 'Oh my God, we're playing on the same stage as Great White played,'" said Mullenix.
A.M.C. mixes up original material with cover songs in various venues around Oklahoma City and Norman. The combination of various musical influences of each member is apparent when listening to their music. "So I hope other people will like it too," Vocalist/guitarist Newman said.

AMC GOING SOMEWHERE WITH 'GOING NOWHERE'
Oklahoma City, Okla. * Members of the band Ambient Music Cartel (AMC) are
extremely excited about "Going Nowhere." Underachievers, they are not.
The Oklahoma City Community College students recently returned from New
York City after completing the process of mastering the tracks on their
first CD entitled "Going Nowhere." The band worked with Sterling Sound, a
company that has helped artists such as the Dave Matthews Band and Macy
Gray fine-tune their songs.
Band members Luke Mullenix, bassist, Jeff Morava, drummer, Shawn Proffitt,
guitarist/keyboard player, and Aaron Newman, vocalist/guitarist, are now
looking for a record deal. The members will soon begin shipping their CDs
out to record companies throughout the United States.
"This is our dream," said Newman, who graduated from Moore High School in
1995. "We have a really good product on our hands and we are optimistic
about finding a record label."
The band members have been together for over a year and perform original
material and cover songs at venues around Oklahoma City and Norman. |
