Artist description In a time where singers and performers with more image than actual ability dominate the music charts, Sally Anthony is the antithesis of the current trend. Choosing to build her fan base with extensive touring, taking time to develop her craft and make music that is truly her own, Anthonys success creates a compelling argument for the power of the artist. Her eclectic taste in music inspires her own work as she combines pop inspired melodies with R&B flavored rhythm and adds a lyrical style critics have deemed thought provoking and unique. With a drive for success that is matched by few, Sally Anthony continues to prove time and time again that she is here to stay. Anthonys passion for music began at a young age. While most 12 year olds were still playing with Barbie Dolls, childhood friends will fondly recall Anthonys obsession with her parents VHS video camera. Most times, the camera was not focused on herself, but on her friends as she filmed them lip-synching the 80s biggest hits. She would pick the songs, style the costumes, pile on the pink lip-gloss and choreograph the dance routines. She demanded that friends take her creative efforts as seriously as she did. Anthonys enthusiasm to the videos made everyone around her believe that their rendition of Belinda Carlisles “Heaven is a Place on Earth” was a truly crucial endeavor. She would occasionally step in front of the camera herself, usually favoring Janet Jackson or other R&B influences of that time. Even at 12 years old, she was impossible not to watch. The videotapes, reflect not only her deep love of music, but also the unyielding ambition and determination that is a still a driving part of her career today. Between 1999 and 2002, Anthony played 250+ shows and released 2 albums on her own label. Realizing the power the Internet had begun to have on the music industry, she released her music on MP3.com and to date her songs have been played and downloaded over 100,000 times. In the spring of 2001, MP3.com profiled Anthony and her song “Nameless In-Between”. The song soon became an underground hit and received airplay on over 100 radio stations nationwide. This in itself was a remarkable accomplishment considering that the song was a demo that had never officially been released as a single and had no independent radio promotion. Two stations (95.7 FM Lewistown, PA and 102.5 FM Huntingdon, PA) received such an overwhelming response by their listeners that they named Anthony “Artist of the Month”. The momentum continued as the strength of her feature on MP3.com along with her powerful fan base led Clear Channel to book Anthony on an extensive summer tour, opening on the Levi’s First Stage for Oasis, Barenaked Ladies, Tom Petty, James Taylor and The Black Crowes. The emotional veracity of her live show turned heads and moved merchandise, selling the 2nd highest CD total (averaging over 75 CDs per show) of any artist or band to tour on the Levis First Stage during the summer of 2001. In addition, Anthony continued to tour clubs, colleges, and festivals including main stage openers for Shawn Mullins, 10,000 Maniacs, Ks Choice and En Vogue. The summer of 2002 began with as much promise as the year before. Anthony was selected as 1 of 10 Emerging Artists in Music nationally by Jim Beam, who awarded her a grant in support of her efforts and as recognition of her outstanding achievements as an independent. In addition, Anthony was added to part of the Midwest leg of the Chris Isaak/Natalie Merchant tour. Anthonys music showcases the songwriting abilities of an artist who can compose both insightful lyrics and compelling melodies. Her songs are introspective and candid, creating a powerful connection with her audience who relate to the honesty of music. In an industry littered with one hit wonders and fabricated bands, Sally Anthony has gotten her success the old fashion way - she earned it.
