Artist History
Ustad Habib Khan's first record release in a jazz idiom was a 1996 recording he did with jazz guitar legend Pat Martino called "Fire Dance" on which he composed the music and played sitar. This experience encouraged him to continue his explorations in jazz. For this he chose scalloped fretboard guitarist Matthew Montfort of Ancient Future due to his skill at applying Indian music to the guitar. Used to working with famous Indian tabla masters (such as Zakir Hussain on "Fire Dance"), Mr. Khan recruited contemporary jazz drum legend Danny Gottlieb to play along with North Indian tabla master Swapan Chaudhuri. To round out the ensemble, he added George Brooks on saxaphone (known for his groundbreaking work with Zakir Hussain), Ira Stein on piano, Alan Kushan on santur, Hans Christian on cello, and Irina Mikhailova on vocals. |
