EVIL::::I remember the first time I heard this song live. It was a nice little three-minute pop song, and I thought to myself "Not a bad song, but not the best they've done". However, true to its name, it soon took on a diabolic life all its own. Now it represents the best of the aural audacity we've come to expect from our favorite Scandinavians (Oh wait, it's not that kind of Fin). The sudden drop off of pace that's greeted with Jake's droning bass line is one of my favorite moments in any song. And how can you go wrong with lyrics like "The mescaline's not working fast enough"? Eight minutes of your life you will never get back, but eight minutes of somewhere you've never been before.
****************B-MOVIE::::Now this is a very nice little three-minute pop song. Actually, this one feels as if there is no real beginning or end to it, that it probably starts long before you hear it and ends somewhere far from where you stop listening... But the three minutes captured here are all we are privy to. Wonderful use of the ubiquitous "Yeah-Yeah", and a bouncy feel propel this song along. A word of caution, however. After a few listens, this is one of those songs that you'll find humming along in your head at seemingly random, and sometimes awkward, moments.
****************************DRIVING::::UP EMIGRATION: A nod to their original home, and perhaps a eulogy for their Utah days? I'd describe the vocals as "haunting", if that weren't such a cliché. Jayson adds a nice falsetto touch to his vocals at points, and this might just be the song that launched Josh's love affair with his delay effect. The guitar line "oozes atmosphere" (hey, if I'm going for rock clichés, I might as well go full bore). This song really has a feel all it's own and is a nifty change of pace, particularly in their live set. "I'm already gone..." Portland doesn't realize how lucky they are. |
