Artist description
Old School with the New School: What do you get when you combine a tiger-stiped Fender Rhodes, and old noisy Italian Crummar Toccata organ, a heavy five string guitar, and MPC2000/Turntablist, a five string bass and a live drummer? Answer: dfRost
Their music is an explosive combination of beat driven hard rock energy and electronica textures, topped off with intense yet melodic vocals. Hailing from San Diego’s Mission Beach area, dfRost was formed in 1998 and consists of:
Dan Frost – Lead Vocals, Rhodes & Guitar, TJ Royer – Lead Guitar, 5 String Guitar & Vocals, Masta Shen – Bass & Vocals, J Feather – Turntablism & Sounds, and Christian Cummings – Drums, Programming & Vocals.
After joining forces with San Diego startup indie label One Drop Entertainment, dfRost entered the studio in the Spring of 2000 to record “Digital Dustbowl”, their first full-length album as a band. With Snoop Dogg engineer Tracey Brown producing, the album emerged as an incredible concoction of intense energy and originality that sold thousands of copies, earned 2 prestigious San Diego Music Awards in 2001, and reaped serious radio rotation on San Diego’s two largest rock stations, 91X and Rock 105.3.
dfRost’s intense musicianship and adrenaline-charged live performances and have given the band a reputation throughout southern California as an act that must be witnessed. With their extensive grass-roots touring and guerilla marketing campaigns, dfRost has amassed an enthusiastic, loyal and rapidly growing following throughout the United States. On the road the band has shared the stage, as well as drinks and then some, with such notable acts as Social Distortion, Snoop Dogg, 311 and the Offspring. Over the last three years, the band has performed at every major San Diego music festival (such as the massive Street Scene, held annually, and 91X‘s X-Fest in 2001). To date, dfRost has over 58,000 tracked downloads from MP3.com, and has been featured on ESPN’s X-Games, BlueTorch TV, and VH1.
In December 2001, after a year-plus of almost non-stop touring and showcasing, the band entered the recording studio to begin work on their follow-up album to “Digital Dustbowl”. The upcoming album, as of yet untitled, reflects the band’s growth and maturing focus, which are sonically captured in harder-hitting, more concise songs, and a stronger emphasis on powerful vocal melodies. At present the band is splitting time between showcasing and finalizing their new release, tentatively scheduled to hit the stores sometime in May 2002.
dfRost endorses Schecter Guitars, Warwick Basses, Dear Markley Strings, Vic Firth Drumsticks, Rane mixers, Sun Diego Surf-Skate and One Drop Gear.
