Dave Salvator, "Little Big Steps"
By Chauncey Canfield
As seen on The Rambo Report on
www.breakingartists.com
This is positively one of the best things I have
heard on MP3.COM. San Francisco saxophonist Dave
Salvator and group delivers an impressive tribute
to Coltrane's "Giant Steps" with his "Little
Big Steps," using the same chord progression,
but with a melody that departs from the original.
Try to picture what Stan Getz would sound like
doing an up-tempo bossa rendition of the bebop
classic, and you'll capture the flavor of this
rare treat. Salvator's sax tone is drop-dead
gorgeous, and the backing guitar trio is as
tight as they come. Confession time: As much
as I love 'Trane's various renderings of
"Giant Steps," it sometimes feels like he's
in a marathon competition to blister through
as many notes as humanly possible in some sort
of musical boot camp obstacle course. Call it
heresy, but I found myself liking Salvator's
version better, in that it his (comparatively)
spare delivery lets the song breathe. He coaxes
the music along with exquisite phrasing until
Guitarist Brad Buethe takes over for a solid,
understated solo. Fantastic stuff. Here's
hoping we'll be hearing more tunes on MP3.COM
from this recently-added artist.
