Daniel's Dream
Dear Life
Their demo, reviewed only a few issues back, showed
some amazing promise for a young band bent on twisting
the alt.folkrock thing into something along the lines
Barenaked Ladies (especially the hummable title cut).
Too bad we didn't pay attention to the lyrics a lot
more, which show that the band have a lot more serious
motivations and a penchant to hike the volume up as
the tracks progress.
While not piously rawk Xian nor hardlined straight-edged
Daniel's Dream does some spiritual probing in the 11
tunes here, with "Come To Your Senses"
("Listen to the call...see who took the fall...
see who did it all"), "You Go Before Me" ("You go
before me- I will follow you...as I await your
return"), and "Awakening" ("Awakening inside- by
letting the truth in...you must be born again").
That said, the tunes can sometimes get caught up
in chunk of cumbersome verbiage (for instance,
"Smoke & Mirrors" has a righteous, thick metal
groove that's diminished by the busy vocal chattering
- same thing for the beginning of "Afterglow"
that could have used some editing down to a
few effective words). And though it sounds like
we're lukewarm to these guys, we're actually very
keen- the music ends up working on its own strengths
(tight arrangements, in-the-pocket rhythm team,
guitarist Steve Porvaznik's soaring leads),
even offering up one of the few awesome,
outright "Freebird"-styled jams in "Afterglow"
to brush up against our ears this year.
Worth an afternoon on the speakers.
