Artist History
Founded in 1990 by pianist JOHN BELL YOUNG and conductor TALI MAKELL, the Nietzsche Music Project was formed in order to examine, research and record the little known and rarely performed musical compositions of the great 19th century philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. With a view towards exploring the links between music, the arts and literature, the project assembled a group of musicians, artists and philosophers from several countries who gave Nietzsche's music an unprecedented forum for scholars and the public alike; they also took a close look at the profound implications Nietsche's philosphical ideas had on the arts in the 20th century. The NMP's recordings of this unusual music (on the Newport Classics label), performed in its entirety by John Bell Young in collaboration with colleagues, were the first recordings of this unusual repertoire ever to be performed by professionals and commercially released. The fruit of years of study, the NMP's efforts to bring Nietzsche's music to life has become the subject of much attention in the international press and a valuable resource for scholars around the world. In 1992, John Bell Young introduced the music of Nietzsche to Russian audiences for the first time in a post-Perestroika concert tour of that great nation; until then, any work of Nietzsche, literary or otherwise, had been banned, since 1917. |
