Artist History
In 1949, Sonny Morris was one of three founder members of the the Crane River Jazz Band. Those early days were full of dedication, practicing on the banks of the river which gave the band its name. One day those young jazz enthusiasts were able to hire a hall for ten bob (50p) at the White Hart in Cranford, a then village close to the river and nearby to London Heathrow. Soon, cornetist Ken Colyer and the Davies brothers joined them, and as word got around how the group was blossoming, budding hopefuls forming in line, were Charley Galbraith and Steve Lane to name two. When clarinettist Monty Sunshine and pianist Pat Hawes joined the group, that led to a hit recording "I'm Travelling" then the BBC Jazz Club radio programme broadcastings followed. Moving on some 40 years to 1990, KJR one day asked Sonny what gig holds special memories to him - he replied without hesitation - "It has to be the 1973 Hamburg, Germany Jazz Weekend with the legendary Crane River Jazz Band with Ken Colyer, Monty Sunshine, Pat Hawes, Colin Bowden, Ben Marshall, Julian and John R.T. Davies in the line-up" (The Cranes ceased on 08/03/1988, at the death of Ken Colyer). Now 50 years on in the year 2000 and leading the Delta Jazz band, you really will dig Sonny and the Boys on this MP3.com set, taken from a concert held at the famous dancing Farnham Maltings Jazz Club, in Surrey, England, with Pat Halcox guesting with the Deltas, whilst holding the trumpet stand/chair in Chris Barber's Jazz & Blues Band. |
