Artist History
JONESTOWN JULEP started out as a scribble on a late-night Denny's coffee-stained napkin in 1991. They were young (the drummer having just turned 14). Eight days later they played their first gig at a party at a friend's house, where they ended up playing the same three songs over and over until the PA had been blown. They went on to write and perform live over sixty songs, of which only a scarce handful were ever recorded. After going through various band member and creative changes JONESTOWN JULEP finally disbanded in early 1994. Chris Beall went on to drum for BLDG. 14 and is currently drumming for SWERVE. Michael Henry has gone solo with BEATNIKPARTY. K. Talis and Jonny America journeyed to Prague where they lived for several months. Again residing in the States, they are now working on a loose project called THE ABSINTHE PARTY with a handful of friends. |

Press Reviews
Headline: 'Jonestown Julep' offers a taste of teen angst ............................................................................................. "Just the word Jonestown evokes a shiver of revulsion. People old enough to remember that November day in 1978 might assume a band poking fun at the macabre would play mind melting acid rock, icy heavy metal or heart-stomping punk. Instead, four 'nice guys' from middle class families have come out of their quiet Temecula neighborhoods to play toe-tapping pop rock tunes about teenage insecurity....Perhaps drawn by the group's morbid name or other opening acts, punk and hard rock fans have literally booed 'Jonestown Julep' off the stage for being too mellow. It is not uncommon for an audience member to threaten to beat up the lead singer. With his lanky frame, wire-rimmed glasses and long, dyed black hair parted on the side, J. America may not have the look punk rock fans crave. His deep singing voice is reminiscent of Elvis Costello" -- Shannon Quinn Langley, The Californian, August 2, 1992 |
