Press Reviews
Custom HeavySofa King Killer are about finding groove, massaging vast amounts of volume out of large speakers, and making sure America's current staple of discerning heavy rock fans develop tinnitis as soon as possible. Funny that the opening track features Pete Townsend talking about the importance of volume...Captain Tinnitis himself. Ironic foreshadowing for the future hearing impaired.I usually am not a big fan of the drinkin' pool acid vocals unless the whole package is REALLY good, and even then I'm not the biggest fan. Makes my own throat hurt just listening to it. This package, however, fits the coveted REALLY good status, so I'm going to make an exception. The vocals go hand in hand with the caustic groove of the music being created here. Still, the singer is gonna make some otolarynologist a shit load of money someday...A listen to the first track "Take Me Up On That" tells you that this band knows a thing about a heavy groove or three. Sofa King Killer choose not to be burdened with an overpowering bottom end, making the guitars sound pretty clean, almost like Prong-doing-Doom, or at least a uptempo-Catherdral-doing-Prong vibe at some points. A nice change of pace for over-blugeoned ears. The production on this album is superb, and overall very crisp for ultra-groove path the SKK have chosen to follow. Did I mention groove already? There is a freight train full of groove on this disc...I can't think of one of the eight tracks that doesn't explore and manipulate the concept of heavy "groove" for all that it's worth. The swamp-groove of the VERY short instrumental "Cajun Lady", the swinging-early-period-Sabbathish riff of "Fearless Shadow", exploration of answer-call volumized-blues-groove territory for "Backdoor Thang" and "Neris", the Dimebag Darrel-on-valium NOLAized-crunch riff of the aptly-titled "The World is a Better Place Without You", and back to Iommi-swing territory for "One More for the Road". |
