Artist History
history:matt, gavin, justin and craig came together in 1996, as four friends with a common interest in making music. however, due to justin and craig’s limited experience, original material did not emerge until 1998. the first song penned by the band was ‘second voice’ – a haunting acoustic number, emphasising the quality of matt’s voice (a voice that has been compared with those of powderfinger’s bernard fanning and the late jeff buckley) – the strength of which is underlined by the fact that it is still a crowd favourite. encouraged by their first effort, the band began incorporating drums and bass into their sound. after developing a set of original material, the band played their first gig as the headline at the nicholson hotel, fitzroy, in august of 1998. many more gigs took place in the following months and this period of writing and performing culminated in the band recording a 3-track demo cd at indent music, brunswick, in december of 1998. although their inexperience in the studio shows on the cd, the band were pleased with how far they had come in the one year, and were excited about future prospects.in march of 1999, rush hour went to work writing new material. matt’s greater input in songwriting, and the use of a second guitar, meant that the group were able to add layers and textures to their material not previously possible. this period of songwriting enabled rush hour to develop a new set list, and to start focusing on their live performances. the band spent several months practicing the new material before they started playing live again in september of 1999. these efforts have paid off, with the band receiving an excellent response from audiences and from the management and staff at the venues they have played at in recent months. at one stage recently the band was playing several original shows a week around melbourne.pleased with the response to their news songs, rush hour are currently working on more new material and, in order to give a better representation of their current sound, are planning to go into the studio again soon to record. |
