Artist History
Formed in 1976 in Lafayette and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the band existed until 1991. Bas Clas is a Cajun expression that means "low class." The band attracted the attention of legendary producer (the late) John Hammond who sought to produce them after he finished Stevie Ray Vaughn's debut album. However, Hammond could not find a label that wanted the group. Then, producer Tom Werman heard Bas Clas and spent the next year unsuccessfully seeking a label. Finally, promoter John Scher signed the band and also was unable to find a home for them on a label. The group released three singles on their own Serfdom Records. Louisiana bands/artists influenced by Bas Clas include Dash Rip Rock, the Bluerunners and CC Adcock, all of whom got their starts opening for the band. Bas Clas played the south Louisiana circuit during a peak in the oil business in that part of the state. They relocated to Atlanta (along with some 30,000 other La. citizens) in 1986 where they found a thriving music scene, but much shorter (and fewer) gigs. However, the city embraced the band on radio and within the music community. Bas Clas made their debut on the LSU Parade Grounds in Baton Rouge in 1976. The band's last gig was their first one at the N.O. Jazz & Heritage Festival in May 1991. |
