Artist description
Ruth Neumann, affectionately known to her friends as "Root", began her modeling career working as a mannequin on New York City's Seventh Avenue. There, she was spotted by the Fashion Editor of Vogue, and within weeks was catapulted from modeling clothes in stores to magazine cover star. Having been previously rejected by the notable Ford Agency, Ms. Neumann received a call one day from Eileen Ford who said: "I hear you're going to be on the cover of Vogue. I want you to sign with me". Ruth did just that, and subsequently graced the covers and inside pages of 'Elle', 'Harpers Bazaar', 'Fashion & Travel', 'Charm', as well as most of the leading fashion titles of the 1950's and early '60's. Ms. Neumann married Gleb Derujinsky, the dashing star fashion photographer employed by Harper's Bazaar (and her main lenser), whose work appeared prominently alongside that of Richard Avedon, Melvin Sokolsky, Louise Dahl Wolfe, Lillian Bassman, Hiro, and Saul Leiter. Ruth Neumann and Gleb Derujinsky had two beautiful children together, not to mention adventures both idyllic and tragic. Mr. Derujinsky left New York City back in the late 1960's, on a self-imposed exile to Colorado. His work, which were among the period's most sophisticated and romantic images, has recently been re-discovered and were shown last year at the renowned Browne/Gallagher Gallery in the East Village. Ms. Neumann was also in attendance, reunited with many of her colleagues and friends; and since those days of glory, her life has been just as eventful. She currently resides in Los Angeles. The selections presented here are accounts and memories of her life and times, and are in her own words. These recordings were made while on the beach, which has always been her favorite place of peace. |
