Artist History
The first question you get as a member of this band is "Where did the name come from"? "We actually thought of changing the name because of that question," lead singer and songwriter Derek Dressler said. But the name has stuck. And where it came from is obvious, if you are a Steve Martin fan. NAVIN was formed in the winter of 1997, although it's roots go back farther than some members will admit. Derek and drummer Brendan Reid met in kindergarten in West Los Angeles and grew up musically and physically (they both hover in the 6'4" area) near each other. "We kind of stayed in touch during grade school," Brendan said, "but it was really the local soccer field that brought us together again," and their mutual interests in music. "Eventually Brendan went to Berklee College of Music in Boston and I went to UC Berkeley," according to Derek. During the summer Derek wrote songs and Brendan played drums and NAVIN slowly came into being. With Brendan and Derek as the nucleus, NAVIN with its intelligent lyrics and full blast basic guitar, bass and drums sound entered the Los Angeles club battles, and started winning with return invites to such landmarks as The Troubadour, The Whiskey and newer clubs like The Gig. In early '99, NAVIN added bass player and multi-instrumentalist Chris Hyland to the fold. Hyland's production expertise and versatility allowed the band to begin recording self-produced demos, one of which attracted the attention of Boston-born guitarist, Jim Daley. Soon after Daley joined up, NAVIN began a series of frequent Saturday night engagements at LA's famed Dragonfly. The well-attended shows generated significant amounts of buzz and interest within the music industry. The future looks bright. A new four song EP featuring NAVIN's new and improved lineup has met with positive reaction. The gigs have taken them as far as Las Vegas with plans to move out further into the great American rock 'n roll wilderness. And the name? Watch Steve Martin's first movie "The Jerk". You'll get it right away. |

Press Reviews
Awesome Job! Wow this is one of the best songs [Will You Come Down] i think i have heard in a long time. Keep up the awesome work thew - Waynesville, Missouri its daft but I quite like it [White Cloud] quite a nice little song really, the lyrics make it sound a bit childish, but I'm guessing that that was probably the idea. HutchUK - Horley, Surrey, UK A Very Positive Review [Let It Out] This is the kind of inspirational anthem of youth that gets everyone motivated to seize the day! Your falsetto has inspired me! I love your screaming! Very sexy. The drums work me into a frenzy! Great guitars paired up with those wacky drums. Bravo! nothinghappens - Waterloo, Ia, Iowa |
