Press Reviews
A few reviews of the New EP "persona".Karnivool – Persona EP (Sic/MGM)Despite a clear affinity for the purer end of hardcore metal, the strength here from these gifted Perthvillers is a capacity to capture a full range of sonic rock imagery. The opener ‘Fade’ proffers a slickly clean and polished vocal, along with a nod to the ethereal. ‘Headcase’ gets fully rocked, but allows a suitably frail falsetto to give it balance. The harder-edged ‘Featherweight’ pulls less punches yet still sways toward a more accessible ‘rock’ tone. A genuinely impressive showcase from a band which, even at this early stage, sports a world-class sound.RICHARD KWONG - Time Off Music Site (Brisbane).Karnivool ‘Persona’ [MGM]Its not very often you walk into a club and hear an act and be encaptivated by its brutish yet eloquent sound and feel. Karnivool proved that it happens. The 4 piece from this little city pump out a big hard grinding sound but with a tasteful array of well sung vocal lines by the vocally talented Ian Kenny. The CD itself contains numerous interesting images of the band members in the cover book, which could be a bit bigger, and a nice little reminder to those people who think its cool to pirate music "any unauthorised production of the material and your outta the vool".Musically the EP is brilliant, with numerous mind blowing riffs and added affects written by Andrew Goddard (guitars) and also accompanied by a rib crushing rhythm section of Jon Stockman (Bass) and Ray Hawking (Drums). The CD contains 5 tracks and all of them are awesomely fuelled with emotional outlet, favourites being 'Head Case' and 'Fade'.This release is recommend to anyone who loves a loud crunchy band that has what it takes to make your head explode at the start of each track. Karnivool have recently grown into being a quality national act and will continue to grow in popularity even more now they have a EP to flaunt themselves with. - Steve Coke (sormax mag)KARNIVOOL - PERSONA EPBy DysieKarnivool are a band that have been around for a good couple of years & would sit in the category of `nu breed metal` or what some would say `tracksuit metal`. In this time the band have steadily increased their profile, most significantly in the past 12 months when the rhythym section was replaced & a batch of new songs surfaced, to a point to where they are probably sitting on top of the `nu breed` scene. So what do we make of this second offering `Persona` from Karnivool? I would have to say awesome & huge are two words that come to mind. Influences would come in the form of Tool, Deftones & other such bands, but they aren`t blatantly obvious & they certainly aren`t just another clone. The CD opener `Fade` starts of with a powerful vocal intro from Ian, proving to us all that this guy can actually sing. This is a trait that can be reproduced live without fault & for the vast majority of this CD the vocal lines are sung, but are still very powerful. The use of effects by guitarist, Andrew, is tremendous, creating various moods within songs & gives the listener a break from the usual chug, crunch, chug of the distorted guitar. This can evidently heard in `Headcase` & the ending track `Some More Of The Same` Stand out tracks on `Persona`, like Jed Whiteys CD are hard to pick as all the songs are of equally strong nature. Track 2 `Da-reka` is the one that has been getting all the airplay & the one everybody would be familiar with, but the rest aren`t far behind it.The production on `Persona` is massive & is ubdoubtedly one of the best quality recordings to come out of Perth for a long time & it will be one of the best CD`s that will come out of Perth this year. It is that good. Receiving plenty of airplay lately on Triple J & of course our own RTRfm these guys are an exciting talent & will no doubt have bigger & better things to come. The live Karnivool is always an impressive one & one that is able to reproduce the sounds on the CD perfectly. Simply huge. No risk of disappointment here & clocking in at 34 minutes you have plenty of music for your money.RATING - 4.5 out of 5 Glenn Dyson (FMC Newsletter) 6th April. Over 2000 recipients.A few recent Live reviews.....Karnivool were called in at the last minute to replace the eagerly awaited Caddis. The ‘Vool are simply too good for their own good right now. With one of the most creative guitarists around, a stellar rhythm section and the stuck-in-your-head melodies of singer Ian, it is only a matter of time before these guys reach the heights they seem destined for. The groove never lets up and the music, while heavy, has broad appeal. The set was electric from the first words of Fade and the punters loved it.City Slam @ Amplifier - Clint Popstar Zine (2000)Karnivool opened up. They won’t, or shouldn’t be opening up for anyone again soon. It is really hard to fault these guys. They are some of the smoothest operators around at the moment. Ian Kenny is the one singer who can see the line in the sand marking style and then pogo war dance way past it. There can be only one Kenny, and he knows his vocal hooks real well. Now so do I, being as they’re still stuck in my head. Karnivool is a band that can lure you in and send you floating across the room, then beat you around with the heavy meat. They have hot stuff on the skins and a string section who sound as good as they look. Get into them now before they are too huge to like. Some more of the same? Yes please.Full Scale Deflection Return Gig @ Grosvenor Back - Clint Popstar Zine (2001).It was a big night for the local heavy music scene. In fact it was a big night for local original music in general. Perth's latest new metal darlings, Karnivool, were launching their second CD Persona with the help of some of their brothers in all things down tuned.By the time Karnivool hit the stage, a shoe horn may have been required to fit one more single person into the room. Quite simply, the place was pumping. And when lead vocalist Ian Kenny sang the Acappella intro to the new disc opener Fade, the crowd just went silly and stayed that way for the entire set. Karnivool do indeed have quite a diverse setlist. From the crunch of Da-Reka to the many moods of the opus Some More of the Same, Karnivool always deliver the goods, much to the audience's delight. One of the more musically tighter bands in Perth, Karnivool also looked like they were having a ball. And why shouldn't they? After what seemed a much too short a set, the 'Vool played their last deafening chord and walked off, keeping the crowd wanting more.A great night of rock for sure.Karnivool Persona EP Launch @ Amplifier - Phil Jupp Xpress Mag (March 23rd 2001).The night was to be finished by the band of the moment, Karnivool. With a track off the 'Persona' EP being played that very day on Triple J and a plug for the gig, it was time to celebrate in true heavy style. The floor was now packed which made moving hard to do, so you had to rely on the band making the crowd move. And moved they did, with Karnivool launching into their assualt of songs off the EP and making a wave of bouncing bodies in the crowd. 'Da Reka' saw "Heavy Weight Grant" take to the mike with Karnivools' vocalist, Ian with the whole band smiling that this was finally happening. The band really have developed and improved since their creation. Had you seen one of their first gigs, you'd almost think they're a different band. Their set was fairly short like all the bands tonight, and despite a call for an encore, that was to be the end of the night. The copies of CD's they had for sale at the door sold out within one hour of the place being open. It shall be interesting to see where the 'Vool' go from here.
