Artist History
Originally conceived as a vehicle for his ambient guitar and loop work, Isabel's Dream is the brainchild of Toronto-based musician Michael Ulrich. Beginning in 1997 as a series of experiments involving his cassette four-track and home computer, the project gradually took on a life of its own, and soon programmed beats began to surface from beneath the steady wash of guitar. The sound was further refined during the summer of 1999, when Ulrich invited his friend Rachel Keeler to add her voice to the mix. Throughout this period, Ulrich had been corresponding regularly with Scott Cortez of Loveliescrushing, keeping him informed about the Isabel's Dream experiments. With the encouragement of Cortez, Ulrich continued to evolve and develop his sound into what Cortez has dubbed "blissbeat." In addition to providing this type of moral support, the relationship between Cortez and Ulrich has resulted in plans for a collaborative project that will likely appear in the near future under the name Monocroma. |

Press Reviews
Michael Ulrich is the soul behind Isabel's Dream an engaging, but mellow factory of sweet, lulling guitar noise over spacey samples and loops. Telesto has all of the above, over a nifty Seefeel-like cloud. Exquisite track. PICK OF THE MONTH! DreamPop Links (5/2000) MOST MOST MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!! Incredibly gorgeous stuff that’s sure to make our year’s tops list! 100%-pure-atmosphere guitar work of just layers and layers of beeeyoooteefull soaring melodies. Rachel and Michael create amazing otherworldly vocal harmonies with their wordless breathy vocals. Bass lines smoother than a whole churn-full of butter roll along. Electro beats and breakbeats ranging from chill to frenetic keep the time. Definitely for fans of early Seefeel and/or Sweet Trip. So incredibly delicious. 7 tracks – over 30 minutes of music. (Clairecords April, 2001) |
