Artist History
The band came about through happenings. The first was when trombonist/record producer Big Bill Bissonnette, who I had met before in New Orleans, came into The Brewster pub in New Malden, Surrey, England, where at the time, I was playing in the Brian White's Magna Jazz Band, and he invited me to make a recording for his Jazz Crusade label, which would be alongside clarinettist Tony Pyke, whose playing he had always enjoyed from the 60s, when Tony and I both together, played for Ken Colyer. The fact that there was to be no trumpet in the line-up filled me with misgivings, but on the 7th of May 1995, when we cut the CD entitled "Do What Ory Say" everything turned out fine, and I found myself enjoying taking the lead of the group on trombone. The second happening came about when Roger Horton, proprietor of the 100 Club, 100 Oxford Street, London W1, offered us an engagement doing a slot in his Friday lunchtime sessions. Following this success, two other CDs were cut, one, "A Tribute To Fats Waller" the other "One Never Knows - Do One" then a year later we recorded "Mainly Morton - Geoff Cole's Red Hot Seven" and on this CD Tony played alto to great critical acclaim from record reviewers in several jazz magazines. I have played in many different bands since I took up the trombone in 1955, including, the Ken Colyer Jazzmen, whom I joined in 1960, and the Muggsy Remembered Band formed in 1985 in which I am currently a member, and also of the Brian White's Magna Jazz band. Oh yes! the name of the band, well I took "Red" from the "Mainly Morton" CD title, and we now call ourselves - Geoff Cole's Red Hot Five. |
