Artist History
When youre thirteen years old, youre at the most impressionable time in your whole life. For the guys in Bench Grinder, this point came during the early 90s when their hometown of Seattle became ground zero for a musical revolution. Grunge exploded onto the scene redefining fashion and dominating television and radio with Seattle natives such as Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Mudhoney. Among the many people inspired by this movement were Chris Collier and Bo Thornton.
Chris was born on an air force base in New Mexico during the summer of 1982. Shortly after, he lived in Wyoming temporarily before moving again to his grandparents house in Washington at age 5. Chris first fell in love with music when his grandfather introduced him to the music of legendary Elvis Presley. At family gatherings, he would sing Elvis songs while strumming on his He-Man sword and have family members toss change into his Radio Flyer wagon. His next musical experience would come in the third grade talent show, when he got together with some friends to perform the song Im Too Sexy.
Around this time, Chris became friends with Bo Thornton. Bo was born and raised in Washington and grew up listening to records of bands like Queen, The Who, The Beatles and Dire Straits. While still in Jr. High, the two friends convinced their parents to buy their first instruments from a Sears catalogue. Bench Grinder was beginning to take shape.
Throughout High School, Bench Grinder played with a constantly changing band line up. However, by releasing several demos and playing everywhere from talent shows to house parties, Bench Grinder established themselves as local favorites. It wasnt until Chris and Bo had graduated that the band would recruit a permanent drummer. Joining them was local drummer, Greg Schaffer. Devine intervention brought these 3 young rockers together in the miserable commercial city of Tukwila, Washington. They hopelessly pursued their passion for music while doing time in a minimum-wage hell.
Bound for glory and cursed by constant misfortune, the band always moves forward in relentless pursuit of a shared dream: taking the world by storm with a brand of music thats both powerfully innovative and refreshingly similar.
