Artist History
This CD would not have been possible without the help of many people and forces of nature. The timing of events, which lead to the ultimate completion of this CD, was such that I could do nothing other than play along. On a winter day I had a revelation; that somehow one man with one guitar could actually make a difference - this became my mission. I had no idea exactly how I was going to pull it off, but this mission would not be denied. During the first few days, I fumbled around on the Internet and in my studio. I found an enormous pool of talent at MP3.COM, and began to post on the message boards there. My slogan was "one man, one guitar on a mission to save the planet". People began to inquire exactly what I meant and I would go into long dissertations about how the planet is being ravaged and resources depleted and how concerned I was about it. After taking great pains to "spread the word" I realized, there was a very long road ahead for one man with one guitar. Abut two weeks into my message board posting, one night, I had the idea to ask the other artists (at MP3.COM) if they would submit songs for a compilation CD, with the proceeds going to "a worthy cause to be named later". In less than one day, there were 15 artists who agreed the cause was just and would submit material. Many other artists wanted to, but didn't feel they had suitable material, yet they offered to help "the cause" in any way they could. I was quite simply floored. These people, these musicians, whom I barely knew, not only agreed to submit material and not get paid, they were anxious to help spread the message. The planned release date was April 21, the day before Earthday 2000; we had three months to get it compiled, mixed, mastered, pressed, promoted and distributed. Over the next few weeks, I had musicians asking questions, emailing me about collaborations, writing special material for the CD, would this one be OK, how about that, mailing me CDs and tapes and uploading files to my shared drives on the Internet. It was VERY COOL and very exciting. I made many special relationships with every artist on the CD via the Internet, talked to a few on the phone. I joined the Earthday Foundation and announced our alignment and my plans to forward proceeds to them. I made arrangements with one (Steve DeMartino) to fly to New York and mix the CD at his studio and while there meet a couple of the other artists who contributed. All the while making phone calls and sending Emails to try and get any publicity I could as well as special considerations from CD duplication houses on the pricing and printing. I had artists from Atlanta to San Francisco and from Chicago to Houston, promoting the project in their towns, additionally we've had folks in Great Britan, Istanbul, Denmark and Canada working for "the cause". In early March, I burned a demo CD with 12 of the now proposed 18 songs. As my son and I listened to it, it brought chills up our spines. We knew the CD would be a hit. I'll would be flying to NY March 24 for the mix down plus re-recording my own and assisting Steve on his contribution, the yet to be heard "Mother Majesty Don't You Cry". I will return to Dogwood Studios just outside Atlanta for mastering, then ship the master off the Nashville for pressing and printing. There were ups and downs all the way, but the project took on a life of it's own; I tag, willingly along, blindly believing in this mission, which has become to be known as "the planet project", "the cause" or simply "STP".I was/am stoked, I would often get only three or four hours sleep. My poor wife seldom sees me except in passing, over the dinner table, present physically, but mind wandering to the reaches of where ever the planet project is spinning at that particular moment. Recently, I began to think about the actual distribution and sales aspect and trying to calculate how much money we might raise. My target, as I write this letter is to sell 2000 copies, which will net the Earthday Foundation $25,000. The one man, one guitar mission being supported by these wonderful new friends of mine brings tears to my eyes every time I think about it. As you listen to the tracks and enjoy the music, I hope you will feel good in knowing that better than 95% of the dollars you spend will end up going to the Earthday Foundation (the balance pays for overhead in getting CDs pressed). It is also a hope of mine that you will tell every single person you know about this CD and get them to purchase it, for each sale will bring us closer to our mission, to Save The Planet.Gary P.
