KAU represents one of the great emerging sounds coming out of Brazil, with their own music, which they call Etnopop. “A blend of Ethnic, Folk and Pop, the group KAU incorporates tribal riffs and folk rhythms that were unheard until now. KAU's exotic sounds originate from unique acoustic instruments and native chants, with a modern approach that bridges the gap between ethnic and pop. |

Artist History
The idea of the group was formed initially in 1991 when Kau, who had come back from one of his trips to the Amazon Forest and Marcelo Reis, who was studying Aerospace Engineering in the University of Colorado at Boulder, joined together. At that time, they began to record the sounds from the forest with the analog synthesizers and the resources of MIDI technology. Noticing that the old world sounds and the new digital formats could be blended, they started the ideas that formed the musical conception of the group. While Kau was working producing soundtracks for television, he met Jacaré, composer and percussionist, who grew up hearing folkloric and tribal rhythms only found in the most remote areas of Brazil. They decided to start playing together and to develop these rhythms in the group’s sound. When joining the group, Jacaré decided to handcraft new instruments that are used in the rhythmic baseline of the songs. During this process, Sandro Guimarães, who was Jacare’s friend, recorded the woodwind and saxophone tracks which give a sophisticated sonority to the group’s sound. From this mix the “Etnopop” concept was born. |
