Daping Qin (Beijin, China), was born in 1957 into a musical family, and studied piano and composition with his father, who is a composer (a pupil of a pupil of P. Hindmith). Beginning in 1970, when the family was sent out from Beijing to Chengdu, Qin studied piano privately with Prof. Yang Hanguo at the Sichuan Conservatory for five years. From 1978 to 1979, he studied harmony and counterpoint with Prof. Yang Ruhuai and composition with Prof. Du Mingxin privately at the Central Conservatory in Beijing. Qin left Beijing to study at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki in the autumn of 1984, taught by composition luminaries E. Hameenniemi, M. Lindberg, and Prof. P. Heininen, as well as piano pedagogue A. Konttori. During his study, he attended masters classes of K. Huber and G. Grisey, completing his Master's degree in Composition in 1992. His works include orchestral music, chamber music, vocal music and computer music. In 1997, he successfully held his Compsition Concert in Helsinki. Qin has won a variety of grants from the Sibelius Foundation, the Wihuri Foundation, and The Art Council of Finland, as well as numerous awards in national and international competitions, such as the "UUSAVEL" Composition Contest in Finland and the SMCQ Internation Composition Competition in Canada. His works have been performed in China, Finland, Canada, USA, Russia, France, Italy, and Romania. |
