Artist History A Message from Sami: nice going, guys. you did it. i hoped for it and expected a lot, but this....! it's a good place to start. a lot of time was spent scratching our heads, wondering why something wasn't working. our scalps bled and a lot of nerve endings were burned. added to this was the aggravation caused by all the naysayers and cynics, the non-believers, people who said 'oh they'll never finish...'. considering all this, everything is very buenos aires and getting better. when i first started running into you guys, i was really into dj shadow and i thought your self-released ep operated in the same sphere. when we got better acquainted, i realized all the potential for truly deep dub and juicy elektro you had. stuff taht was a hundred times funkier than all the disgusting, bar band wanna-bes. you've always been very cool, but never snobbish, like too many Helsinki bands. the feeling at your shows was always mellow and good natured, like at really good punk shows. the funniest was when people thought you were somekind of finnish hip hop phenomenon, the first since the legendary and much lamented raptori, cos Helsinki Rock City rocked so hard. you guys were so r'n'b, it was unreal. these suomi-soul dudes can only dream. you are as far from all the bomfunks as lauryn hill is from sami saari. no need to dis those guys or keep from being associated with them-you guys are just different and soon people will catch on. What is Giant Robot? it's good, it's global, but finnish. it's punk and pornos. it's the music of love. Petro and Arttu: incredible, loose, funky guitars. Zarkus: the high priest of the bass drum, the master of rhythm. Aleksi: deep underwater dubbiness. Tuomas: impressive interpretations of soul. T-Mu: intoxicating sounds and echoes. Kim: the pinnacle of meaty, erotic organism. quite an achievement. good songs and a cool atmosphere all through the album. really good covers, too. i'm into the fact that we got to put Masa Pyykkö's ferociously beautiful video for Helsinki Rock City on this cd. apparently the video is just way over the collective heads of the media in this country. so, things are going well. and if you are hanging out at libraries, put this in as the starting page: http://katastro.fi/giantrobot, ok???? i'm all into it, so i keep telling people it's the record of the year and the first ever whatever made in finland...let's see what the others think. it doesn't matter, though...the smart ones will get it. enjoy the rest of the year and take it easy...in helsinki on the 26th day of november, 1999Sami Häikiö
