Artist History
Born in Cologne, he began his viola studies at the Hochschule für Musik Köln . He continued with Ivan Galamian and Margaret Pardee at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he also studied conducting. He also worked with Josef Gingold and members of the Julliard Quartet. He completed his studies at the California Institute of the Arts under Alan de Veritch, and in Germany with Andreas Brockmann and Sergiu Celibidache.Since 1986 he has lived in Cologne and has been artistic director of the Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra, of which he is today chief conductor. Mr. Hartung has already led the orchestra on several successful tours throughout Europe and since then is to be heard regularly in its most important venues - Hamburger Musikhalle, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Kölner Philharmonie.In 1994 he conducted R. Strauss´s "Also sprach Zarathustra" with the Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra on German television. Further collaboration produced numerous compact disc recordings, evidence of a particularly inspired relationship beween conductor and orchestra. Recordings with the Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra for Westdeutscher Rundfunk and appearances at the Cologne Opera were to follow. In late 1999 Mr. Hartung appeared as guest conductor with the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester, conducting in the Leipzig Gewandhaus. In 2000 they are to make a compact disc together, as well as several radio broadcasts. In 2001 he will conduct members of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Gewandhaus Concerts.Besides his usual work together with the Cologne New Philharmonic his activies include nuemrous appearances as guest conductor on the international stage together with numerous famous orchestras, like Kattowitz Philharmonic and the St.Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. |
