‘Borrowed 4-Track Recorders and Sneaky Songwriting’ In late 1999, Jay Garrigan would borrow friends' 4-track recorders and began to record lo-fi versions of his songs. “I would sneak into college rehearsal spaces and record myself playing on their pianos, tympani, whatever was readily available.” These songs were a combination of short 3-minute pop explosions and longer story-based epics. The songs on these tapes attracted some of the best players in the region, as well as a street-buzz of Jay Garrigan’s songwriting and recording skills. ‘Love and Hook Laden Legacy’ Jay Garrigan has been a member of some of Charlotte’s most critically acclaimed bands, including 2nd Skin/Violet Strange, Laburnum, and Boil. “When I started playing in bands, I didn’t realize that I was a composer who needed musicians to direct. As I wrote more songs, it became more clear that audience and industry liked my songs best, but I didn’t have the ego to fight with band members about a change in band direction and vision. I quit my other bands because my songs were literally calling to me. I started to play these songs solo around the Southeast, and later I formed Poprocket because I wanted a wicked rocking band to present those songs.” ‘Some Songs’ Poprocket’s first EP Some Songs was recorded and mixed in two days by Doug Williams at Electro Magnetic Radiation Recorders in Winston-Salem. “Doug has a lot of vintage equipment, some of which Mitch Easter used to record early REM. I sang into CB microphones, old airplane pilot microphones, and I played guitar through an old portable school PA systems. The results were fantastic – as the songs sound like nothing else out there.” ‘Indie Rot’ It’s the title of the 2nd EP from Charlotte, North Carolina rock outfit Poprocket, and on it you’ll hear 5 tracks of love and hook-laden rock. IndieRot was recorded by Chris Garges at Jay Howard Audio in Charlotte, NC. It was recorded over a period of several months as finances permitted. Jay Garrigan’s confessional lyrics and mood run from witty to woeful – from trying to understand why Lou Reed hung out with Andy Warhol, to comparing a relationship to a fishing outing, “you can’t have back the one you threw away”. ‘Deep Sea Wishing and a New Record Label' Jay Garrigan and crew are currently recording five new songs. These songs will be combined with the Indie Rot EP to make Poprocket’s first full-length album which will be titled “Deep Sea Wishing”. This will also be a first release for Jay Garrigan’s new label… (without letting the kitty out of the bag too soon - yes, Jay is forming a new label). ‘A Diverse Cast of Characters’ This is the best way to describe the musicians who make up Poprocket. Current lineup includes original drummer Shawn Lynch (x-Lou Ford) and bassist Jenny Plyler. “My band enjoys rocking out – nothing makes us happier than putting on a fun rock show.”

    Press Reviews
"Each song is an adventure, the tempo and mood can careen around the stage like some manic child full of sugar that will run up and kick you in the shin, do a lap around the room and then come back and give you a hug. A Poprocket song doesn't conclude, it crashes or implodes and when the feedback dies it's just three guys looking a bit sheepish as if to say, that was pretty intense but hey, it's just us." - Ed McDonald, Music Comit Magazine"...Featured is Charlotte, NC trio Poprocket, a jangle-pop outfit a bit like the Smithereens with a touch of the buckleys in the vocals and the Beatles in the backbeat." - Nicoll/Ware, Creative Loafing, Atlanta."Poprocket - Adventurous pop music in the mold of the Pixies, the Smithereens, with a little Sonic Youth-style dissonance thrown in for good measure. Jay J Garrigans songs are primarily composed of delightfully skewed looks at relationships and life." Tim Davis, Creative Loafing"We were struck by the thoughtful yet entertaining lyrics of one of the most energetic pop bands to come through our fair city in months." - Tomi Siegal, Hipcity.net, Atlanta"The most fantastic part of this trio would have to be the lyrics (well, almost - Js wonderful facial expressions). The lyrics aren't just catchy, but vary from deeply moving to downright irresistible. I envision Popprocket to be one of the most promising bands to come out of Charlotte these days." Kathy Everhart, Bittersweet Magazine."J. Garrigan and the boys are touring like mad at this point, which may be just what the doctor ordered: Garrigan's songwriting may be rooted in the green pastures of classic pop, but it's surrounded by barbed-wire hooks that make the band's smoother-than-ever musical delivery even more noticeable in contrast. A band that takes itself seriously by not taking itself too seriously, if that makes any sense. With the Daybreakers, Thursday, Fat City, and with Crooked Fingers, Saturday, Tremont Music Hall. " Tim Davis, Creative Loafing
