    Artist History
The music of Dreadnaught - known as 'progabilly,' a term coined to describe the band's unique amalgam of old school progressive rock, Americana, classical, and jazz - has captivated audiences, musicians, and critics alike. Over the last 6 years Dreadnaught has steadily become one of the most innovative and acclaimed young bands to emerge from the American music scene; in the last 2 years alone, Bob Lord (bass guitar), Justin Walton (guitar), and Tim Haney (drums) have played over 250 shows across dozens of states and countless seedy hotel rooms, abusing their poor van tour after ruthless tour, performing with artists as diverse as John Entwistle of the Who, Rustic Overtones, Strangefolk, and a very odd fellow from NYC who lip-syncs his own material and goes by the name of Valkyrie. From the frantically heavy King Crimson and Bach-inspired opener "Ballbuster" to the pastoral Yes and Aaron Copland-esque strains of "Derby Days," Dreadnaught's groundbreaking third album THE AMERICAN STANDARD pulls absolutely no punches. Recorded with longtime engineer Shaun Frenchie Michaud of Event (Inside Out Records) and Andy Happel of Thanks to Gravity (former Capitol Records) and featuring cover art by the Brothers Hildebrandt (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars), the album was released by Red Fez Records on 17 November 2001 and has received multiple 'best of' wins in both listeners' and critics' polls. Prolific composers who continually push their talent and creativity to its edge and beyond, Justin Walton, Tim Haney, and Robert Lord have each been active professional musicians for more than a dozen years. Walton (guitar, vocals) is a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston; Justin's singular writing and playing style incorporates classically influenced forms and structures into a vivid soundscape of jazz harmony and progressive musical ideas. Haney (drums and percussion) is an immensely intuitive drummer reminiscent of both Animal from the Muppets and Joe Morello from the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Seriously. Equally adept at performing highly structured and freely improvised forms, he has sometimes been mistakenly identified as Vishnu. The supercharged electric bass guitar of Robert Lord is as likely to rip a distortion-drenched solo as it is to swing the backbeat with flatpicked chords; Lord's compositions and arrangements are often as musically intricate as they are hummable - a rare feat indeed.

    Press Reviews
"It's entirely different from everything else that's out there, these guys can play the hell out of their instruments... This is the type of album Rush, Yes, and Zappa were making in the days of Quadraphonic sound, lots of dope, and giant headphones. It's great." PORTLAND PHOENIX (USA, 12/01) "I've just experienced a high equivalent to drinking a gallon of strong fresh coffee and sticking my finger into a live mains socket… Akin to watching a captivating horror film, you dare not leave the room whilst it is playing for fear of missing something. "HAIRLESS HEART HERALD (UK, 2/02) "Fabulous... this is some of the most original music I've heard in a long while. The intricate arrangements overflow with clever playing and boundless energy. Justin Walton is a most creative guitarist, and bass player Robert Lord's savage bass lines sound like Chris Squire of Yes crossed with Les Claypool of Primus. If there ever was a must-hear prog album, Dreadnaught's THE AMERICAN STANDARD is one." PROGRESSIVEWORLD.NET (USA, 12/01) "Unique delicacy and complexity. Dreadnaught is the Phish, Moe, or the Disco Biscuits of indie rock, except they spare the listener of the boredom that sometimes finds its way into the end of a ten-minute jam. Simply, THE AMERICAN STANDARD is good. Really good." LOSTATSEA.NET (USA, 1/02) "Holy shit, this is weird. An unusual and unique album which has lots of secrets to discover. Highly innovative!" DURP (GERMANY, 2/01) "It wasn't until after the show that I took a close look at their list of upcoming gigs, and when I did, I was flabbergasted. These guys are working their asses off... They are purposefully and without any small sacrifice bringing their music to us, the people who are going out to see real people play real gigs." FACE MAGAZINE (USA, 2/01) "Mind-frying time signature changes, fearlessly fused styles, and a keen sense for the insane... Sick, sick, sick New Hampshire boys." IDAHO STATESMAN (USA, 1/02)
