Press Reviews
A return to the music scene for the very talented Jerry Davison formerfrontman for American cult hero band Jacob's Trouble. In some waysSideways8 continues in a similar vein pulling together all the things thatmade JT great! Wearing their sixties influences firmly on their collectivesleeve and cross fertilising them with a healthy dose of seventiespowerpop, this still sounds healthily contemporary. Aptly enough, there areeight songs on this debut album which mix observation, humour and catchysingalong superbly satisfying melodies. Yes I like this! I think it's justthe sardonic wit of "Be In A Band" which tells the ambitious dreams ofgiving up school and becoming superstars that makes me smile. (And let'sface it, any band which namechecks Cheap Trick in a song has to be cool!)"What Will You Be" is a chunky medium paced challenge to consider theimpact of the life choices we make. "Cross The Line" lets out all the stopsand rock'n'rolls like a good un' whilst "Hiding In The Bushes (With Adam &Eve)" manages to balance some astute observations about human nature withsome sub Link Wray sixties guitar pop. Elsewhere something like "Save Me" perfectly illustrates Davison's talentsfor writing catchy Beatles influenced pop and Sideways8 look like a bandwho deserve more attention. (9 squares out of 10)Mike Rimmer, Assistant Editor of Crossrhythms magazine(Review of Be In My Band, from the compilation Sheet Rock: Music to benefit Atlanta Habitat for Humanity) “Far and away the best song…hilariously silly…It’s impossible to resist the chorus…” – Southeast Performer Magazine, July 2000(Review of Save Me) “This is really my favorite! This group really rocks! …makes me want to get on my feet and rejoice…a great Beatles-meets-2000’s feel…strong guitars and background vocals…a positive group with something to say…It’s really hard to pick just one song from the band. Keep it up, guys!” – THE ZONE, Christian MP3 Review, MP3.com |
