Artist History
it was the summer of 1995. i was taking a class in early english literature with the one and only outrageous shakespearean linda charnes. local rocker kenneth childers (of velo-deluxe at the time) was in the class as well as ranty rocker molly kaman. molly and i met during a poetry class the previous semester and had bonded over our affinity with fuller figured gals and courtney love. anyway, it was during gulliver's travels that i invited molly to my house to "jam" as it were. neither of us were experienced on the instruments we'd be playing (molly - bass, me - guitar) but we proceeded valiantly nonetheless. shannon LaBoskey soon brought her strat into my room and joined the fray. we quickly composed several herky-jerky songs and had a lot of fun just goofing off. nick quagliara (sway kiss, panoply, giuseppe, prettypony, christys, ets al) was putting on a show the following week and was busy making the flyer when he heard us play. he asked us if we'd like to play the show. we gave each other frightened looks, threw caution to the wind and said "yes." what to call ourselves though? and where to find a drummer... First things first: a name. there was a young lady in our class who exhibited a fondness for puffy soft pink sweatshirts displaying kittens and bad highlights in her stringy long hair, trussed up with less than elegant yarn. it was definitely a look. she seemed physically to be about 19 or 20, but if you were to judge her by her apparel you might guess 8. molly and i quickly dubbed her "milk and cookies" and prettypony" alternately. we figured, when we were asked, that one of these would make a swell band name. we went for prettypony because of it's distinctly 1980s appeal. Nick added our new name to the flyer and we were committed. as for our as-of-yet TBA drummer, we were kind of at a loss. i asked my friend sara cassetti (sway kiss, prettypony, au naturalette, hairdressers) if she'd help out and she agreed. soon we were practicing and had prepared four songs before the following friday's show. the show was a success... my friend Mantra was visiting from boston and taped the affair on shannon's pink slimline jambox and that recording to this day is still one of my favorites... to be continued... |
