Ryan Farish - Man of mp3 Steel By Ben Ohmart, MusicDish.com Composer Ryan Farish (www.ryanfarish.com) embodies the American Dream of music. He first uploaded his music to mp3.com in 2000, and 1.5 million downloads later he is still in demand. More than that, he has successfully molded his skills in electronic music to providing custom music for over 1500 businesses daily across America with his hit-making Worldtrax Music company. He composes, produces, and licenses music for television, software, and other various multi-media creations. And it all started here: his songs Night Wind, Secret Garden, Embrace, Letting Go, 'Daydreamer' and Friends have all held the #1 spot for their genre on mp3.com. His albums have ranked as high as #4 best selling in Easy Listening. This is exactly the success the thousands of other artists and bands hope for, every day. What makes Ryan so different from all the others is simply the music. His latest cd, the 69 minute Daydreamer, is almost flawless electronic pop, in the style of Tangerine Dream at their most melodic, but with decidedly a more modern feel and perfect production values. Again, the whole thing, from start to finish, is a product of Ryan's mind. There is an intensely tuneful beauty behind all this electronica. It is not dance music, nor is it techno to the point of dehumanization. Of course all you have to do is go to www.mp3.com/ryanfarish and find out for yourself... Thematically Daydreamer ranks with the best of the genre, from the opening lite beats of 'Night Wind' to the end reprise of the delightfully buoyant 'Holding Faith.' Being all instrumental there are no well-chosen words to set pictures in your mind. Like any good movie soundtrack (and this one beats out anything since John Williams gave up tunes), the tranquil, rhythmic images create pictures in your head, usually of a better time and place than You are living. Positive. This is a positive album. "Some of my main influences," says Ryan, "have been Pat Metheny, BT, ATB, Pop music in general, lots of jazz, pretty much anything that musically or emotionally made me feel something." You won't hear this music on tour, but frankly that's not where its strength lies. This is studio music, for those wishing excellence of sound and mix. Not only is his construction solid, but Ryan is in love with Sound. There are too many sounds on earth for him to glue himself to one for the entire hour +. Therein lies the True charm of this 2nd release (though he boasts 4 albums on mp3.com): life is always a bonus track. Sounds ebb and flow with an experimentation that never veers far enough from 'pop' to ever become a problem. Okay, if you're now seriously wanting to hear Ryan 'live,' he explains, "No tour, although The Ryan Farish Group does gig selectively. There are 6 in the group, and I love playing with these guys, they are great!" The man doesn't need to gig. It would be a waste of time. He just needs to create more computer-induced music. It's what people are waiting for. And why he's mega-popular. "I have been a professional musician for many years, but my business really took off soon after uploading my music to the web. Sites like mp3.com played a huge role in helping me get noticed. When I first uploaded my music to that site, I was so excited to get a few plays, and now I get thousands a day. mp3.com has a wonderful community of artists that have helped inspire and shape my efforts, by their feedback and support. As far as how others can utilize mp3.com, I would say the most important thing is to just join the site. I have been discovered by so many companies and listeners from that site, that I can't imagine if I had overlooked that opportunity." It often takes composers/performers their whole lives to achieve this kind of greatness. Most never even make it then. Of course, Ryan had a prodigy's headstart. "I began my journey with music at the age of four, when I was enrolled in violin lessons. I studied violin for 13 years. I also studied drums/percussion and piano privately. I went on to be a performance major at Old Dominion University, but left before completing my degree because I had offers to gig with some great acts." And part of it comes from the kind of music Ryan favors. "Electronic music is what's being placed behind a lot of things, but the fact that its instrumental does allow it to be very versatile and easy to work with." He offers this to fresh minds who think they have similar talent and assume that it's going to be easy to do what he's done. "Always try to find your favorite genre or sound, and stick to it. It's easy to get caught up in trends, but stay true to what you love, and listeners will find you and be attracted to that kind of dedication." So what's in the Ryan Farish future? "Hopefully more of the same, and I'd like to strike a nice distribution deal with a major. I just want to be able to reach out further to the listeners of this genre." The music will speak for itself. You cannot create worlds of sounds like these and expect to go unnoticed to the corporate suits of rich men's companies. He doesn't really need them. But he needs to be in every record store on the planet, definitely. www.ryanfarish.com Provided by the MusicDish Network. Copyright © Tag It 2003 - Republished with Permission. All Rights Reserved.
