    Artist description
Pillar officially formed in 1994, during the 10th grade at Sheldon-Williams Collegiate in Regina, Saskatchewan. Jamie Deal (bass) and Jonah Krieser (guitar/voice) had previously been in a band together called Butch The Dog, and though the group had already amassed a large local following, a change in musical direction and the loss of a drummer meant it was time for new and better things. With the addition of Simon Haywood on second guitar and Chris Mcbennett behind the drum kit, the group took on a more textured sound while still maintaining the harder edge that was there from the beginning. In 1995 the band recorded a demo and sent it to the committees at Canadian Music Week. The group was accepted and in early 1996 played a Polygram showcase at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto with Regina Post-Punk band, Bluebeard. The show went well and a very positive response was given by all in attendance. The Toronto show gave the group a new found sense of confidence and continued to work on the songs and the over-all sound of the band. Later that year, Pillar appeared on a compilation put out by Calgary based label, Melodiya Records. The comp was called “Thrash Concert Tonight” and was top 10 on college radio charts all over Canada, and in many cases, the 2 tracks from pillar being considered some of the strongest songs on it. In 1997 Simon Haywood left the band to pursue a career in film audio. The band would continue as a three-piece, honing their sound while sharing the stage with such acts as Unsane, D.O.A, The Primrods, Tristan Psionic, Sloan, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Eric’s Trip, The Smalls, Strungout, Elliot, Six Finger Satellite, King Cobb Steelie and many others. In 2000 Pillar would win a city wide band competition, earning them a slot on the Molson DV8 extreme sporting and music festival, as well as some free recording time at Touchwood Studios in Regina. With that, (as well as money out of their own pockets), the band would record their first full length album entitled, “Everyone Is As Terrified As You Are.” The record was released in late 2001, and since then has been selling extremely well locally as well as steadily gaining popularity on Canadian college radio stations. By early 2002, Stacy Hahn (formerly of Canadian punk favorites, Layaway Plan) joins Pillar on second guitar, adding a more layered, complex dynamic to the group. Currently, the band is planning to tour as much of North America as humanly possible, as well as finding the means for more wide spread record distribution. Touring plans aside, priority number one for the band is, and always will be, trying to write interesting, honest music. Some people say that rock is dead. This band believes that that couldn’t be further from the truth. There is a whole new army fighting the war against mediocre, overproduced, over-manufactured insincere bullshit. This is one band that couldn’t be happier to be on the front lines. Rock is winning.
